Accra: Ghanaian musician and LGBT+ activist Angel Maxine has called out politicians for prioritizing the anti-LGBT bill over more pressing national issues. Her criticism comes in light of recent comments by Assin South MP John Ntim Fordjour, who urged President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to apologise to Ghanaian religious leaders for allegedly sidelining the bill.
According to Ghana Web, Fordjour's position was a reaction to President Mahama's remarks, which downplayed the significance of the anti-LGBT legislation amidst the nation's challenges. In an Instagram post dated April 8, 2026, Angel Maxine questioned the rationale behind focusing legislative efforts on the bill when crucial infrastructure and social needs remain unaddressed.
Maxine expressed her concerns by asking why politicians are spending public funds on debates she deems unnecessary, citing more critical issues like deteriorating roads, lack of clean water and electricity in some communities, and an overstretched healthcare system. She questioned the bill's impact on economic factors such as electricity and fuel prices, arguing that the bill does not address these fundamental problems.
Her stand is supported by fellow activist Wanlov the Kubolor, who praised President Mahama's decision to de-prioritize the bill. Angel Maxine emphasized that there are numerous significant issues facing Ghana that require immediate attention, suggesting that the focus on the anti-LGBT bill is misplaced.
