Unionist Criticises Ghana’s Over-Reliance on Imported Tomatoes

Accra: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over Ghana's growing dependence on imported tomatoes, describing the situation as troubling and unacceptable. Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, April 4, Koomson said it is a national embarrassment that a country with vast arable land and favourable climatic conditions continues to rely on imports of basic food items. According to Ghana Web, Koomson noted that while Ghana may face challenges in producing complex goods such as computers or vaccines, there is no justification for the country's inability to produce sufficient quantities of tomatoes locally. He questioned why Ghana continues to depend heavily on imports despite its agricultural potential, pointing out that neighbouring Burkina Faso, which has more difficult farming conditions, is able to produce and export tomatoes to Ghana. He stressed the need for renewed focus on the agricultural sector, urging the government to prioritise investment in far ming, provide support to local farmers, and implement policies aimed at reducing food imports. According to him, strengthening local production is essential to improving food security and ensuring long-term economic stability.
