Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Ghana will implement a free visa policy for all African nationals beginning May 25, 2026. This announcement was made during a bilateral meeting with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Peduase Lodge in the Eastern Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized that Africans traveling to Ghana would be able to obtain their e-visas online without any charges. This initiative aligns with Ghana's historic commitment to pan-Africanism and aims to foster greater integration across the continent. The President noted that Ghana had already established a visa-free arrangement with Zimbabwe, allowing citizens to travel between the two countries without needing a visa.
President Mahama highlighted the broader e-visa reform program that the Ghanaian government plans to introduce in conjunction with the visa-free policy. These initiatives are expected to enhance Pan-Africanism, boost tourism, and strengthen Ghana's appeal as an investment destination. He assured the public that adequate measures would be in place to ensure the nation's security is not compromised.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to continue pursuing additional visa waiver agreements for Ghanaians holding various types of passports. Since taking office in 2025, President Mahama's administration has signed 23 such agreements to improve the value of the Ghanaian passport and facilitate easier travel for its citizens.
During the meeting, both Ghana and Zimbabwe reinforced their commitment to pan-Africanism and collaboration with the African Union, the United Nations, and other multilateral platforms. They discussed global challenges, emphasizing dialogue, diplomacy, respect for sovereignty, and international law as key tenets in addressing these issues.
President Mahama noted the productivity and forward-looking nature of President Mnangagwa's state visit, which has charted a clear path for deeper relations between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for the partnership spirit and looked forward to returning the visit to Harare. President Mnangagwa reciprocated these sentiments, acknowledging the historic ties and shared aspirations between Ghana and Zimbabwe.
