Accra: A 14-year-old building belonging to the Accra New Town Experimental School in the Greater Accra Region collapsed on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the three-storey building gave way following heavy rainfall. The structure had previously been declared unfit for use by the assembly and was earmarked for demolition.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that a total of 23 persons, including 15 females and 8 males with 3 minors among them, were trapped in the rubble. Through the efforts of GNFS rescuers and partner agencies, 20 individuals were successfully rescued and taken to various health facilities for treatment. Sadly, three persons, two females and one male, lost their lives. Their remains have been handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation.
Security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), are on the ground assisting in rescue operations and providing support to victims.
Former Interior and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, accused security agencies of politicising the rescue mission, claiming he was asked to leave the scene due to his political affiliation. Speaking to the media, Quartey expressed frustration over the situation, stating that despite his efforts to help, he was prevented from staying at the site due to political reasons. He alleged that personnel from national security, the police, and the military forced him out of the area. Quartey further criticised the actions of the Ghana Police Service, citing misconduct and disrespect.
