Takoradi: Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has reassured Ghanaian workers that SSNIT is strong and performing well, with more than a 25 percent year-on-year growth in its assets under management in 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Trust's assets under management expanded beyond GHC25 billion in 2025, rising from a total of GHC20.4 billion in 2024. Additionally, the real return on investments showed a positive shift from negative 4.2 percent in 2024 to a growth of 8.03 percent in 2025. Mr Biney expressed confidence in the continued upward trajectory of SSNIT's financial health and sustainability.
Mr Biney's remarks were made during a regional forum organized by SSNIT in collaboration with the Trades Union Congress (TUC Ghana) in Takoradi. The forum aimed to educate workers on pension benefits, address prevailing misconceptions, and collect feedback to enhance the Trust's services. This initiative, conducted nationwide, sought to bolster awareness of SSNIT's operations, thereby maintaining members' interest and deepening their understanding of the Tier One Pension Scheme. The event was themed 'Empowered Unions, Secure Futures: Deepening Pension Literacy Across Ghana.'
Mr Biney credited SSNIT's success to improved accountability and prudent asset management, highlighting that its investments, including those on the stock exchange, appreciated by GHC2.5 billion in 2025. He noted that dividends from the stock exchange alone exceeded GHC300 million. He affirmed SSNIT's commitment to managing the Trust carefully to ensure the protection and sustainability of Ghanaian workers' interests.
Addressing SSNIT's assets in the hospitality sector, Mr Biney assured that there were no plans to sell any hotels. Instead, strategies are being developed to strengthen SSNIT's presence and profitability in the industry. He also commended the government for its consistent payment of employee contributions to the Trust from 2025 through January 2026, expressing optimism for the continuation of this trend.
Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, the Deputy Secretary General of TUC, praised SSNIT for the initiative, stating that it provided members with an opportunity to seek clarity regarding their contributions.
