Accra: Mr Edem Kofi Kpotosu, a Member of Parliament of Ho Central, has organized a free comprehensive health screening for drivers and their assistants in Ho.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, which was part of Mr Kpotosu's birthday celebration, replaced the usual festivities with a health-focused outreach targeting commercial drivers and their mates in the municipality. In an interview, Mr Kpotosu emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups for drivers, particularly eye examinations, highlighting that good vision is crucial for road safety.
Mr Kpotosu expressed the honor he felt in celebrating his birthday with his constituents by prioritizing health over merrymaking to give back meaningfully. He explained that the exercise included free eye screening, new registration, and renewal of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards, as well as checks for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
He noted that many drivers often neglect routine health checks due to the nature of their work, which could endanger both their lives and passengers. Mr Kpotosu emphasized that addressing issues directly affecting people can mobilize them quickly, and with his team, they ensured the intervention reached those who needed it most.
The MP expressed gratitude to the Ho Municipal teams of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and NHIS for their collaboration, describing the partnership as essential to delivering quality healthcare services at the grassroots. The screening exercise was open to all eligible drivers and their assistants, and he urged them to take advantage of the opportunity for comprehensive health checks.
Mr Dickson Dogbaste, Chairman of the GPRTU Branch Two in Ho, along with beneficiary drivers, commended the MP for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful in improving their health and safety on the roads.
