Accra: Rev Professor Paul Yaw Frimpong-Manso, Founder of the Frimpong Manso Institute (FMI), has called for a renewed national focus on production and export-driven economic policies to help Ghana overcome its economic challenges. Speaking as Chairman of the 2025 GhanaWeb Excellence Awards held on March 6, 2026, Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso said the country must move beyond policy rhetoric and implement practical solutions that boost local production, create jobs, and strengthen the national economy.
According to Ghana Web, Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso addressed a gathering of dignitaries, award winners, media practitioners, and distinguished guests, expressing both pride and humility in chairing the prestigious ceremony. He emphasized the significance of the awards event coinciding with Ghana's 69th Independence Day, urging citizens to remember the sacrifices made by the country's founding fathers and freedom fighters. While acknowledging Ghana's political independence, he highlighted the ongoing economic challenges, such as dependence on external markets and imports, constraining the nation.
Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso noted that Ghana's economy remains vulnerable to international market fluctuations, citing the decline in global cocoa prices that have impacted local farmers. He expressed concern over the reliance on imported food products, such as tomatoes from Burkina Faso, despite Ghana's favorable conditions for agriculture. He described this import dependence as an indictment of the country's production capabilities.
The academic and religious leader urged policymakers to create incentives for increased production and export activities, emphasizing that such measures would generate employment, reduce poverty, and strengthen the Ghanaian cedi. He stated that by incentivizing individuals and businesses to produce more, Ghana could enhance its export earnings and achieve economic resilience.
Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso also congratulated the award winners, expressing hope that their recognition would inspire further achievements in their respective fields. He commended GhanaWeb for organizing the Excellence Awards, describing it as a commendable initiative that celebrates achievement and contributes to national development.
