Accra: Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang announced that the Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and various stakeholders, will focus on strengthening discipline and value-based education in schools to address issues of indiscipline. The initiative aims to bolster guidance and counselling, ensuring that disciplinary actions remain both firm and fair across educational institutions.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Vice President made these remarks during an event where she awarded basic school students for their exemplary performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination. A total of 52 students were recognized at this year's President's Independence Day Awards. The awards were themed 'Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,' and included 32 students from public schools, 16 from private schools, and four special needs students with hearing and visual impairments. The students received prizes such as laptops, plaques, and certificates, courtesy of sponsorship from Nestl© Ghana.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the theme of the awards signifies a call to action for students to adhere to the law to achieve their full potential. The government plans to review and update existing disciplinary measures to ensure they effectively deter misconduct and support a conducive learning environment. She reiterated the government's commitment to providing every child with the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
The Vice President encouraged students to maintain their focus, respect school authorities, make wise friendship choices, and excel academically, highlighting the prestige their achievements brought to themselves, their families, and the nation.
Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Minister of Education, remarked that the regional representation of the awarded students reflects a commitment to excellence and inclusivity, ensuring equal opportunities for all. He praised the teachers for their dedication and vowed that the government would continue implementing interventions to foster excellent learners and promote inclusive quality education.
