Asukawkaw: The Lordina Foundation, spearheaded by First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, has officially handed over a newly constructed and fully equipped ultramodern maternity and children's ward to the Asukawkaw Clinic in the Karachi East District of the Oti Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, this project was initiated following a request made on March 2, 2025, by Nana Odam Gyamfi III, the Paramount Chief of the Akroso Asukawkaw Traditional Area. During the inauguration ceremony, Mrs. Mahama emphasized that the facility was meticulously designed to provide dignified and excellent service to mothers and children. The comprehensive facility includes a reception and waiting area, doctor and nurses' offices, children's and maternity wards, a fully equipped operating theatre, a delivery room, a sterilization room, and a neonatal intensive care unit.
Mrs. Mahama highlighted the advanced life-saving equipment installed in the ward, such as electric beds, operating tables, infant incubators, ultrasound systems, and other critical devices. She also noted that the ward is equipped with solar panels to ensure emergency lighting and reduce electricity consumption. "We have also provided furniture, waiting chairs, desks, cabinets, and cleaning supplies, ensuring this facility is ready to serve from day one," she stated.
The Asukawkaw facility marks the fourth modern health center completed by the Lordina Foundation, following previous projects in Bole, Nkoranza, and Bodom, along with renovations and expansions at the Hohoe and Adabraka Clinics. Mrs. Mahama reiterated the Foundation's commitment to preventing maternal and infant mortality due to inadequate healthcare facilities.
Mrs. Mahama urged local health authorities and the community to protect and maintain the new facility, emphasizing its significance for future generations. She asserted that the safety of mothers strengthens the nation and that access to healthcare empowers women and communities. The Foundation's mission remains to make primary healthcare accessible to women, girls, and the elderly.
The Foundation expressed gratitude to its partners, including OAFLAD and Meck Foundation, for their shared vision of a healthier world. Mrs. Mahama recalled the urgent appeals for improved childbirth conditions and stressed that no woman or child should be deprived of essential care.
In recognition of her contributions, Nana Odam Gyamfi III installed Mrs. Mahama as the Development Queen Mother (Nkosuohemaa) of the Akroso Asukawkaw Traditional Area. The Chief acknowledged her efforts and called on the Government to upgrade the Asukawkaw Clinic to a Polyclinic.
Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, announced plans for the construction of three regional hospitals this year, benefiting the Oti Region.
