Accra: Ghana's former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, is making a significant return to frontline politics with his bid for the parliamentary seat in Ayawaso East under the banner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Baba Jamal, who previously served as a member of the 6th Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency, is seeking to stage a political comeback after losing his seat in the 2016 General Elections.
According to Ghana Web, Baba Jamal's early political career was marked by legal challenges and closely contested elections, including the 2008 parliamentary election, which resulted in prolonged court battles. Despite these challenges, he won the Akwatia parliamentary seat in December 2012, securing 50.44% of the total valid votes cast. However, in 2016, he lost to New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Mercy Ama Sey, who garnered 21,433 votes compared to Baba Jamal's 15,905.
Baba Jamal's political journey continued beyond domestic politics when he was appointed as Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria by President John Dramani Mahama. However, his diplomatic role was short-lived as he returned to contest the NDC parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East following the death of incumbent MP Naser Toure Mahama. Baba Jamal won the primaries on February 7, 2026, with 431 votes, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who received 399 votes.
The upcoming March 3, 2026, by-election in Ayawaso East is set to be a closely watched contest. Baba Jamal faces competition from Baba Ali Yussif of the NPP, Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People's Party, and independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umar Sanda and David Kannor. Umar Sanda's candidacy follows his expulsion from the NDC for defying party rules.
Baba Jamal has emphasized his commitment to serving the grassroots and contributing to development in Ayawaso East. His campaign focuses on community engagement and development initiatives, including infrastructure improvement, youth employment, education, and welfare programs. An opinion poll by Global InfoAnalytics projects a strong victory for Baba Jamal, with 75% of the vote, well ahead of his main opponent Baba Ali, who is expected to secure 21%.
While the poll indicates strong support for Baba Jamal and the NDC, the final outcome will be determined by voters on March 3, 2026.
