Accra: Mr. Samuel Yao Atidzah, the Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, emphasized that HIV does not define a person, but rather, dignity, respect, and love do. He reminded the people of Ghana that no individual should face discrimination due to their HIV status. This statement was part of a release shared with the Ghana News Agency in Ho to mark Zero Discrimination Day.
According to Ghana News Agency, Zero Discrimination Day was initiated by UNAIDS in 2014 and is celebrated annually on March 1 by the UN and various organizations. The day aims to promote equality, inclusion, and peace for all individuals, irrespective of age, gender, race, or sexual orientation. It highlights the importance of ending discriminatory laws and practices, especially those contributing to the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.
This year's theme, 'People first: Standing united for dignity, equality and inclusion,' calls for collective action to end stigma and discrimination while promoting inclusion and supporting people living with AIDS in their communities. Mr. Atidzah urged everyone to unite against stigma and discrimination and to foster an environment of support and inclusion.
He also encouraged individuals to know their HIV status through the use of self-testing kits, which he described as private, confidential, safe, and empowering. The Executive Director highlighted that taking control of one's health is a sign of strength, not shame, urging both young and old to get tested, be aware of their status, and take steps to protect themselves and others.
