Kumbungu: The Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID) Ghana has inaugurated a six-unit classroom block at the Nwodua R/C Basic School in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region. This new facility is expected to enhance the educational environment for pupils and teachers alike.
According to Ghana News Agency, the fully furnished classroom block includes an ICT centre, a staff common room, a headteacher's office, and sanitary facilities. Mr Mohammed Awal Sumani Bapio, Executive Director of CALID, noted during the handing-over ceremony that previous assessments by the organization revealed overcrowded and challenging learning conditions, exacerbated by insufficient furniture.
The project, which cost approximately GHc1,417,843.10, received funding from the Japanese Embassy in Ghana through a grant assistance. CALID also contributed GHS100,000 for the procurement of computers and sanitation facilities, and the Kumbungu District Assembly pledged to provide furniture. The Ghana Education Service played a role by facilitating the posting of qualified teachers to the school.
Professor Hamza Adam, Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and highlighted the critical role of education in the area's development. He pointed out that Kumbungu is one of the more deprived districts in Ghana, with significant infrastructural needs, and emphasized ongoing collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the availability of teachers and learning materials.
Madam Yuze Haruko, Head of Political Affairs at the Japanese Embassy, represented the Ambassador at the event and reiterated Japan's dedication to improving educational access in Ghana. She explained that the project is part of Japan's grant assistance initiative, which focuses on creating conducive learning environments.
Mr Yakubu Imoro Kakpagu, the Kumbungu District Chief Executive, officially opened the facility and urged community members, school authorities, and stakeholders to maintain the infrastructure. He reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to partnering with development agencies to enhance social and educational infrastructure throughout the district.
Community members expressed their happiness and gratitude for the new facility, viewing it as a boost to education and community development in Nwodua and its surrounding areas.
