Sunyani: Some aggrieved royals of the Nana Boahen Korkor Royal Family have called on the Bono Region House of Chiefs to expedite the adjudication of the Sunyani Chieftaincy Dispute.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Nana Boahen Korkor Royal Family, which comprises the Nyantakiwaa, Kwantwiwaa, and Akosua Dua Royal Gates, emphasized that the mediation conducted by Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, was intended to facilitate the court proceedings necessary for resolving the dispute.
The family highlighted the principle that "justice delayed is justice denied," expressing concern that prolonged adjudication could exacerbate tensions among conflicting parties. This sentiment was shared during a news conference in Sunyani, where Mr. Joseph A Danquah, spokesperson for the Boahen Korkor Royal Family, responded to a recent press conference held by the Sunyani Traditional Council (STC).
Mr. Danquah, alongside Nana Obiri Yeboah, the family head of the Nana Boahen Korkor Royal Family, clarified that the family's public statement aimed to correct misconceptions following claims made by Nana Kwaku Sarbeng, the Acting President of the STC, who suggested that all pending chieftaincy cases had been discontinued for peace.
Mr. Danquah refuted this claim as false, asserting that Nana Akwamuhene's statement misled government officials, including Mr. Ibrahim and Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister. He recalled a meeting held on August 14, 2025, where Mr. Ibrahim invited Boahen Korkor Royal Family members to discuss the Sunyani crisis, emphasizing that the minister's objective was to reduce tensions to allow the court case to proceed.
During the meeting, a 10-point roadmap was established to maintain calm. However, by February 2, 2026, when the sector minister reviewed progress, only minimal compliance with the roadmap had been achieved, such as the return of vehicles by the queen mother to the STC.
Mr. Danquah criticized the STC's Acting President, noting that as a non-member of the Boahen Korkor Royal Family, he lacked authority in their affairs. The family reiterated that, according to their customs, selecting a new chief is the queen mother's responsibility, in consultation with the royal family's principal elders.
He asserted that no external body or the STC could impose a chief on the royal family, confirming their non-recognition of Mr. Agyare as Sunyani's chief and their pursuit of legal redress. Mr. Danquah concluded by affirming that no chieftaincy dispute court case in Sunyani has been withdrawn and called for stakeholder support to resolve the dispute in the community's best interest.
