Addis ababa: President John Dramani Mahama has rallied his fellow world leaders to support the Accra Reset Initiative. Speaking at the Accra Reset Addis Reckoning Event at the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Mahama thanked some world leaders who had accepted to be on the Interim Presidential Council of the Accra Reset, leaders who have invested political capital in an idea still evolving, still demanding courage.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama expressed his gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi of Egypt, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia. The rest are President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, President Faure Gnassingb© of Togo, President Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados. "Your acceptance to serve on the Council reminds us that leadership is often exercised before certainty arrives," he said.
President Mahama addressed the question of what the Accra Reset really means, explaining that it is an architecture and framework through which Africa and its partners align finance, health, trade, skills, and technology into a single direction of travel. He described the initiative as a response to frustrations that have now given way to determination, sparking breakthrough thinking that would change the calculus of international relations.
He cited Global Health as an example, noting how health systems have been seen as budget drains for too long. Through the Accra Reset, every Finance Minister now understands that health is the foundation of productivity and stability. He announced the establishment of their High Level Panel on Reform of Global Health Architecture, co-chaired by Professor Peter Piot, Honourable Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Chancellor El Hadj As Sy, and Honourable Nisia Trindade Lima.
President Mahama reiterated that reform would be grounded in knowledge of past failures while animated by future promise. He highlighted the Sovereign Negotiators Certification Programme, designed to cultivate a generation of dealmakers who can navigate technology agreements, minerals contracts, and complex financing with confidence.
On Trade and Mobility, President Mahama mentioned the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Hub and digital platforms, emphasizing the new meaning of the League of Free Movement. He introduced the Global Digital Skills Passport, which ensures that the qualifications of young Africans are recognized across platforms and countries.
President Mahama noted the expression of the New Bandung Spirit in Global Partnerships, with exchanges with South Korea, Singapore, India, and Indonesia opening pathways for technological learning and digital trade. He emphasized that all these developments are becoming embedded in industrial planning and governance systems.
He concluded by rejecting the false choice between ambition and realism, asserting that the Accra Reset marks the beginning of a more disciplined phase in which ideas must prove themselves through delivery. "We must commit to definitive decisions: On deal making, On health as a multiplier of wealth, On critical minerals supply chain intelligence, On the repatriation of African sovereign forex reserves, and On digital skills passports," the President said. "It is time to commit. It is time to interlock our Sovereign Prosperity Spheres. It is time to transform."
