Manchester: Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has drawn criticism from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer following remarks about the country's immigration system.
According to Ghana Web, Ratcliffe, who holds a 27 percent stake in Manchester United, expressed his concerns about the UK being overwhelmed by immigrants, which he believes is contributing to economic challenges. He controversially stated that the UK has been "colonised by immigrants" and called for measures to prevent a future crisis. Ratcliffe questioned the sustainability of having nine million people on benefits alongside high levels of immigration, citing an increase in the UK population from 58 million in 2020 to 70 million as evidence of his claim.
Prime Minister Starmer quickly responded to these statements, labeling them as "offensive and wrong." He emphasized that Ratcliffe's comments undermine the integrity of the country and called for an apology. Starmer reiterated that Britain is a nation that prides itself on tolerance and inclusivity, welcoming people from diverse backgrounds.
The backlash was not limited to political figures. Manchester United fan group The 1958 also condemned Ratcliffe's remarks, describing them as "embarrassing." In response to the criticism, Ratcliffe has issued an apology, clarifying that he did not intend to offend and was simply expressing his views.
