Accra: Justice Philip Bright Kwabena Mensah, a Supreme Court Judge, has gracefully retired after 50 years of dedicated service to Ghana's Judiciary.
According to Ghana News Agency, Justice Mensah was appointed to the Supreme Court by President John Dramani Mahama on July 3, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
Justice Mensah's journey in the judiciary began as a court recorder (typist), progressing through various roles including assistant registrar, Registrar of Magistrate, Circuit and High Courts, and Regional administrative officer before his judicial appointment. His retirement commenced on Thursday, February 12, 2026, upon reaching the constitutionally mandated retirement age of 70.
At the Valedictory Judgement Ceremony held at the Supreme Court, Justice Gabriel Scot Pwamang, a Supreme Court Judge and Acting Chief Justice, commended Justice Mensah for his dedication, perseverance, and unwavering faith in the institutions of justice. He emphasized that retirement does not diminish the value of a life fully devoted to the judiciary and the nation.
Justice Mensah's career, marked by institutional loyalty, hard work, and effective management, serves as a testament to what can be achieved through diligence and commitment to self-improvement. His significant contributions to the bench and selfless service will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Efua Ghartey, President of the Ghana Bar Association, lauded Justice Mensah for maintaining the highest standards in judicial roles throughout his tenure. His fairness, adherence to facts, and rigorous questioning set a benchmark for judicial conduct, earning him respect from members of the Bar.
Justice Mensah's courtroom was known for its emphasis on preparation, precision, and courtesy. His judgments, characterized by intellectual principles and a commitment to substantial justice, provided legal guidance and resources for successful legal outcomes.
Justice Dr. Cyracus Badinye Bapuurah, Acting Judicial Secretary, highlighted Justice Mensah's influence on young lawyers and colleagues, noting his steadfast adherence to the rule of law. His legacy continues to shape Ghana's judicial history.
Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu, President of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), acknowledged Justice Mensah's exemplary service and his advocacy for staff welfare, which earned him the role of Regional Secretary of JUSAG in the Western Region.
In his farewell remarks, Justice Mensah expressed gratitude to those who supported his journey to the Supreme Court. He highlighted significant cases he presided over, including the Republic versus Kwabena Duffour, and Stephen Kwabena Opuni and two others versus the Republic.
