Kumasi: Retired FIFA referee William Agbovi has described the Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak as the ultimate platform for referees in Ghana. According to Agbovi, officiating the country's fiercest rivalry comes with enormous pressure but also provides an unmatched opportunity.
According to Ghana Web, Agbovi emphasized that the Kotoko-Hearts game is a significant platform where referees have the chance to make their mark as the match attracts both local and international attention. 'The Kotoko-Hearts game is a huge platform. Everybody is watching that match, both local and international. That is where you make your name. That is where you are pushed,' Agbovi shared on Peace FM.
Reflecting on his own journey, Agbovi, a former FIFA badge holder, revealed that he had the privilege of officiating this prestigious clash nine times before retiring. He noted that these high-profile encounters significantly shaped his career and boosted his visibility. 'My second match was Kotoko versus Hearts in Kumasi, Top Four 2002. My last one was the President's Cup, also in Kumasi, before I went into retirement. In total, I handled Kotoko and Hearts nine times.'
The upcoming Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak is set to take place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
