Tema: The Tema Metropolitan Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has honoured 36 teachers for their outstanding performance, dedication to duty, and contribution to improving teaching and learning outcomes across the metropolis.
According to Ghana News Agency, the awards ceremony, held as part of efforts to motivate educators and promote excellence in the classroom, brought together education officials, municipal authorities, school administrators, and teachers. This event underscored the directorate's broader commitment to strengthening quality education and professional development within the public education system.
The awards, covering the 2024/2025 academic year, were organised under the theme 'Celebrating Teachers as the Pillars of Good Quality Education'. Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, through a representative, commended the education team for successfully organising the awards ceremony, noting that recognising excellence serves as a powerful motivation for improved performance.
Hajia Attah emphasised that such initiatives reinforce commitment, promote professionalism, and strengthen integrity within the service. She observed that the Tema Metropolitan Education Directorate has demonstrated commendable leadership and strong institutional commitment, which she described as the foundation of its award-winning success.
She called for sustained efforts to celebrate, empower, and honour teachers as the true builders of quality education and national development, stating that the ceremony affirmed the fact that hard work, dedication, and ethical conduct do not go unnoticed by leadership.
Ms Ebi Bright, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), shared a personal anecdote about her mother, who was a teacher supplementing her income through small-scale business activities, highlighting the economic realities faced by many educators. Ms Bright further noted that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly recognised education as a central pillar of its transformative development agenda. In line with this commitment, the assembly allocated GH?90,000 for the Best Teacher Award Scheme for the year 2026.
The MCE also announced that the assembly would provide permanent office accommodation for the Education Directorate, acknowledging its strong performance despite longstanding accommodation challenges. She added that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly would intensify efforts to protect schools from encroachment, aiming to uplift the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) pass rate to 80 per cent and ensure that at least 90 per cent of schools achieved the standard teacher-pupil ratio.
Madam Bernice Ofori, Tema Metro Director of Education, stated that the metro stands as a pillar of educational excellence, supervising 50 public schools and 90 private schools within seven circuits with a combined enrolment exceeding 58,500 learners. This responsibility is managed by a committed staff strength of 65 and 3,512 facilitators operating from several office locations across the metropolis, including Community Eight Market, Community Seven Post Office, Aggrey Road JHS, Community Two, and Mante-Din Basic School in Community One due to the lack of a dedicated office building for the directorate.
She noted that Tema Metro emerged as overall best at the 2024 zonal level Basic Schools Festival of Arts and Culture, winning eight out of twelve disciplines, and also dominated the zonal and Greater Accra Regional Kindergarten Festivals of Arts and Culture. The awardees received prizes including chest freezers, televisions, citations, and certificates, among others.
