Accra: The Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended Seth Welbeck, 53, on charges of threat of death and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The arrest took place on Tuesday, February 3, following a forgery case where Welbeck had been summoned to appear before the Accra Circuit Court.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement from Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Head of Public Affairs, Accra Region, detailed that the suspect was being escorted to the court cells after proceedings when he requested permission from the investigator to secure his vehicle. During this process, Welbeck retrieved a Smith and Wesson SD9 VE pistol, loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, from the vehicle and threatened the investigator with it.
Court officials and witnesses assisted the investigator in swiftly disarming Welbeck, effectively bringing the situation under control. The statement confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and will be arraigned to face justice.
The Accra Regional Police Command urged the public to refrain from acts of violence, threats, and possession of firearms and ammunition without legal authorization, emphasizing the risks such actions pose to lives and property. Furthermore, the Command advised adherence to lawful court processes and police procedures at all times, warning that any attempt to obstruct justice, intimidate public officers, or resort to violence will be firmly addressed in accordance with the law.
