Accra: Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his re-election as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Akufo-Addo praised Bawumia's loyalty, dedication, and hard work toward the development of Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, Akufo-Addo shared his thoughts in a post on his X page dated February 4, 2026. He highlighted the recent visit by Bawumia and his spouse, where they paid a courtesy call on him. Akufo-Addo emphasized his confidence in Bawumia's capability, citing his character and commitment to both the party and the nation. He expressed optimism that with the support of party members and supporters, Bawumia would lead the NPP to victory.
Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, securing 56.48% of the valid votes. His closest rivals, Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, obtained 23.76% and 18.53% of the votes, respectively. The primaries were conducted at over 300 polling centers nationwide, with participation from more than 211,000 delegates.
Following his win, Dr. Bawumia has committed to fostering inclusive leadership within the party. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate for a unified effort, emphasizing the importance of unity in enhancing the party's appeal to voters across the country.
