Techiman: Bono East Regional Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Mr. Ikililu Amidu, has raised concerns over the significant population growth in the region, with 44,116 births recorded between 2024 and 2025. The majority of these births were male, with 22,851 in 2024 and 21,265 in 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Amidu also reported 1,778 deaths within the same period, with 898 in 2024 and 880 in 2025, showing a male dominance in these figures as well. He highlighted issues with families not reporting deaths, complicating the registry's ability to maintain accurate records.
Mr. Amidu noted the registry's challenges in fulfilling its duties due to inadequate resources and personnel, including a lack of transportation and only 22 staff members. He urged for additional resources to enable the registry to effectively carry out its responsibilities under the Births and Deaths Registry Act (Act 1027), 2020.
He appealed to traditional authorities and community leaders to aid in promoting the importance of registering births and deaths for effective planning and development. Additionally, Mr. Amidu called on district and municipal assemblies to implement byelaws mandating families to register vital events, emphasizing it as their civic duty.
