Keta: Dr Bryan Acheampong has emerged the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary held at Vodza-Adzido Roman Catholic Basic School in the Keta constituency of the Volta Region. Dr Bryan Acheampong, who was a former Minister for Agriculture, secured 269 votes, while Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, trailed in second position with 241 votes. Kennedy Agyapong, a businessman and former MP, came third with 101 votes.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Education Minister, secured 15 votes, while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former NPP General Secretary, garnered four votes. A total of 621 valid votes were cast out of an expected 662, with three ballots rejected. Dr Benjamin Dzameshie, the Party Chairman in the Constituency, stated that the results indicated a tight contest among the aspirants. He noted that the flagbearer primary was seen as a crucial test for the party's internal cohesion and support ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr Dzameshie urged supporters to remain calm and emphasized that NPP is a united family. He encouraged members to rally behind the chosen flagbearer to regain power in the 2028 general election. He also advised supporters to celebrate with caution to avoid creating tensions that could hurt the party in future elections. The election was closely monitored by party members and political analysts, and Dr Dzameshie thanked security personnel and party executives for ensuring a peaceful and credible election process.
Meanwhile, Elikem Sewordor, the party Secretary, informed the Ghana News Agency that the National Elections Committee had not yet announced the final results, but the provisional results indicated strong performances by all candidates. Some party supporters expressed that the primary's outcome might significantly impact the party's prospects in the 2028 general elections and hoped for the best aspirant to form a formidable team ahead of the polls.
