Walewale: The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has condemned what he describes as an unprovoked assault on a journalist and several civilians by military personnel in the Walewale township.
According to Ghana Web, in a statement on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the MP stated that the incident occurred around 1:00 pm on Monday, January 26, when armed soldiers traveling in an armored vehicle and a truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale reportedly stopped in Walewale and attacked residents. The soldiers allegedly assaulted the Northeast Regional Correspondent of Media General and numerous civilians, destroying properties, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles.
The conduct of the soldiers was described by Dr. Abdul-Kabiru as unprofessional. He noted that the incident has instilled fear among residents. The MP highlighted that the journalist was detained for more than four hours following the assault, and video evidence of injuries sustained during the incident was reportedly deleted from his phone.
Dr. Abdul-Kabiru explained that consultations with the Walewale District Police Command and military authorities in the area revealed that neither was aware of or involved in the operation. He recalled a similar incident in February 2025, involving the same journalist and other civilians, some of whom were left permanently injured without compensation.
Expressing concern about increased militarization in Walewale, Dr. Abdul-Kabiru warned that such actions could heighten tensions between residents and security services. He criticized claims linking recent military actions to attacks on buses in the area, describing them as misleading.
