Accra: Former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta may never return to Ghana if protests demanding his return persist, musician Showboy has suggested. In a social media post dated January 25, 2026, Showboy expressed concerns that ongoing demonstrations could endanger Ofori-Atta’s life, potentially driving him to seek political asylum.
According to Ghana Web, Showboy elaborated that Ofori-Atta’s legal team is well-equipped to fight for his stay in the United States, potentially extending it for several years. The musician emphasized the importance of recognizing that Ofori-Atta has not violated any U.S. laws, as overstaying a visa for legitimate reasons, such as health concerns, is permissible under immigration law.
Showboy further explained that the protests, dubbed ‘Bring Back Ken’, could inadvertently aid Ofori-Atta’s case for asylum. He argued that the former minister faces threats to his life, and international human rights laws could protect him. Showboy stated that Ofori-Atta’s offenses were against the state of Ghana, not individuals, and criticized the Ghanaian government for trusting him in the first place.
Ofori-Atta is currently wanted in Ghana on multiple criminal charges, including allegations of corruption linked to the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited contract. Despite these charges, he was detained in the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 6, 2026, due to his immigration status.
The musician shared his personal experience with immigration detention, noting the lengthy process involved and the potential for Ofori-Atta to remain in the U.S. for an extended period. Showboy highlighted the distinction between immigration and criminal law, asserting that human rights are prioritized in the U.S. and that Ofori-Atta could be granted bond if his life is deemed at risk or if he has health issues.
