Accra: Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo, has highlighted inadequate funding as a significant challenge faced by universities in Africa and globally.
According to Ghana Web, universities require sufficient infrastructure and financial resources to accommodate an increasing student population and fulfill their societal roles. However, these needs have remained unmet for some time.
Speaking at the Anton Wilhelm Amo Lecture at the University of Ghana, themed 'Where are the Therapeutic Intellectuals? Popular Culture and Autobiographical Narrative for Justice and Healing,' Prof. Akosua Ampofo emphasized the necessity for institutional support to address emerging educational demands and produce well-rounded students.
Prof. Ampofo also pointed out the "hidden" costs associated with initiatives like free secondary education, emphasizing the need to understand the limitations present in both African and global contexts. She noted challenges such as reduced funding, burgeoning student bodies, inadequate infrastructure, diminished governmental support, and unclear tenure and promotion systems. These factors contribute to demoralizing work environments and overwhelming workloads.
The CEO and Director of 715 House Media expressed concerns about the narrowing focus of university education, shifting from its broader mission of societal improvement to a more limited scope aimed at economic growth. Universities are increasingly pressured to concentrate on economically beneficial research, often dictated by government or corporate interests, rather than the holistic advancement of human knowledge and cultural preservation.
Prof. Ampofo warned against the pervasive influence of neoliberalism, which emphasizes individual competition in global markets. This has resulted in a restrictive focus on job market preparation, driven by metrics such as rankings, centers of excellence, and citation counts, which, she argues, constrain the broader educational mission of universities.
