Accra: Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has urged judges to remain resolute and courageous when faced with pressure, emphasizing the importance of deciding cases solely based on law and evidence. He advised judges to maintain their independence while recognizing that it is a privilege and a burden that requires courage.
According to Ghana News Agency, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie addressed these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of 52 Circuit Court Judges at the Law Courts Complex in Accra. The newly appointed judges include 40 magistrates recognized for their years of dedicated service, along with 12 lawyers from private practice and other legal sectors.
He highlighted the critical role of the Circuit Court within the judicial system, as it deals with serious criminal cases, complex civil disputes, and issues impacting livelihoods and social stability. He urged the judges to exercise their judicial power with humility, diligence, and a strong sense of responsibility, cautioning against any abuse of authority that could undermine public confidence in the rule of law.
Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized the importance of integrity, competence, and independence, advising judges to be wary of situations that might compromise their impartiality. He stressed the need for continuous learning and adaptation to the dynamic nature of law, encouraging clear and well-reasoned judgments.
He also discussed ongoing judicial reforms, noting the Judicial Service's investment in digital systems, and urged judges to embrace Information and Communication Technology tools as enablers of their work. He reminded them that while quality must never be sacrificed for speed, undue delays erode confidence in the justice system, advocating for effective case management and discipline.
Mrs. Efua Ghartey, President of the Ghana Bar Association, also addressed the judges, urging them to ensure their work fosters peace, harmony, and justice for the people.
