Algiers: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee has imposed heavy sanctions on Algeria following misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The sanctions come in the wake of Algeria's quarter-final defeat to Nigeria, where some players and team officials were involved in a brawl that breached CAF's disciplinary codes.
According to Ghana Web, the CAF Disciplinary Committee has responded to the incident by imposing financial penalties amounting to $100,000. In addition to the financial penalties, sporting sanctions have been levied against key members of the Algerian squad. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches due to his involvement in the incident, while defender Rafik Belghali faces a four-match ban. These suspensions will take effect during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The breakdown of the $100,000 fine includes $50,000 for media and fan misconduct, $25,000 for the misconduct of players and officials, and $10,000 for failing to comply with security rules. The 2025 AFCON was marred by chaotic scenes that caused international embarrassment to the continent, prompting CAF to initiate these disciplinary measures to serve as a deterrent.
