Accra: Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday visited the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as part of her ongoing tour of selected ministries after completing one year in office. She was greeted by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, who described the visit as both timely and motivating, noting its potential to further energize the ministry's efforts in advancing the government's reset agenda.
According to Ghana Web, Minister Adams provided an overview of the ministry's achievements since the current administration took office. These accomplishments include hosting major international tournaments, winning medals across various sporting disciplines, and securing Ghana's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, he highlighted the need for increased investment in sports infrastructure, financial mobilization ahead of the World Cup, and the timely release of funds to sustain development efforts.
In a significant update, the minister informed the Vice President about steps taken toward operationalizing the Sports Fund, including the inauguration of a board to address long-standing funding challenges within the sector. Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between her office and the ministry, expressing her readiness to assist in the preparation of bills and other initiatives.
The Vice President assured the ministry of her support, stating, "I want to assure you that our doors remain open to you and don't wait till there is a problem, just come let's have a chat, especially in preparation of bills. We are better placed to offer support and if there are things to review we are there because we want your suggestions to go through and we have your back."
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also expressed a keen interest in athlete welfare and safety, emphasizing that "people don't need to suffer based on the discipline they have chosen." She welcomed progress on the Sports Fund, encouraged the exploration of multiple revenue streams, and commended the ministry for enhancing Ghana's global image through sports.
