Accra: Mr. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, has articulated the pivotal role of the media as an active partner in national development and democratic consolidation, diverging from the perception of the media as mere observers in the development process. He emphasized the media's influence in shaping public consciousness, influencing policy conversations, and amplifying the voices of the voiceless.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Puozuing made these remarks during a press soiree organized in Wa, aimed at fostering engagement between journalists in the region, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC). The event served as a platform for discourse on governance, accountability, and development, which are integral to democratic practice.
The Regional Minister lauded journalists and media practitioners in the region for their professionalism, responsibility, and dedication in contributing to the region's development. He noted that responsible journalism had significantly influenced development-related discussions by highlighting challenges, mobilizing stakeholders, and, in some instances, attracting national and international attention and support.
Mr. Puozuing highlighted the government's commitment, under President John Dramani Mahama's leadership, to strengthening democratic governance, safeguarding press freedom, and improving relations between state institutions and the media. He urged journalists to continue ensuring fair and balanced reporting that holds duty-bearers accountable while focusing on development-oriented and human-interest stories.
Addressing the region's major development challenges, Mr. Puozuing identified the growing incidence of drug abuse among the youth as a significant concern. He called on the media to intensify advocacy against drug abuse to support the efforts of the Regional Anti-Drug Abuse Taskforce.
The Minister also reassured the public of measures in place to effectively respond to any meningitis outbreak in the region. On infrastructure, he noted ongoing work under the government's 'Big Push' road projects, including the Wa-Hain-Tumu and Wa-Sawla Roads, and mentioned that the contractor for the Wa-Hain Road was expected to mobilize to the site within the month.
The press soiree was attended by members of the Regional Security Council, heads of departments, and unit heads of the Regional Coordinating Council.
