Richard Ahiagbah Responds to Prof Frimpong-Boateng Over Bawumia Re-election Claim

Accra: The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has addressed remarks made by former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. The comments in question pertain to claims that the party should not select former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Ahiagbah has accused the prominent heart surgeon and politician of undermining the party in an effort to promote his chosen candidate in the upcoming NPP primaries. According to Ghana Web, Ahiagbah emphasized that while Prof Frimpong-Boateng is free to support any candidate he wishes, he should do so without disparaging the party's reputation or undercutting other contenders. In a social media post on January 13, 2026, Ahiagbah stated, "I think Prof. Boateng is campaigning for his candidate; the only problem is that he is impugning the NPP to advance his candidate ahead of the 31st January primaries. It's okay for him to do so but not at the detriment of the party or Dr. Bawumia as he did in his interview on Channel One." Ahiagbah further commented on the potential negative impact of Prof Frimpong-Boateng's approach. He argued that such tactics could harm both the prospects of the party and the candidate being promoted. He noted, "Prof's is harmful to the prospects of his candidate and the party. Indeed, this approach to campaigning for one's candidate is, to say the least, damaging. Truth is, any one of the five aspirants will give the NPP a fighting chance in the 2028 presidential election. Now, let Prof. advance why he thinks his preferred candidate gives NPP a superior fighting chance in 2028. This is the way to go... Let's all focus on the big picture. NPP first....that's it!"
