NPP Touts Development Achievements in Zongo Communities, Outshining Previous NDC Government

Accra: The Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) has showcased a series of infrastructure projects and social interventions implemented by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, claiming significant advancements over the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration in Zongo communities across Ghana. The claims were highlighted at the "Zongo Gaskiya Forum" in Accra, where the NPP's impact on these communities was a central theme. According to Ghana News Agency, the ZoDF has initiated over 200 projects targeted at improving healthcare, education, sanitation, and sports within Zongo communities. Notable initiatives include the distribution of 5,000 dual desks, construction of 70 new classroom blocks, and the installation of 17 astroturfs. Moreover, the Fund has facilitated scholarships and entrepreneurial training, providing substantial support to 40 outstanding students from Zongo communities to study medicine in Cuba and aiding Muslim women entrepreneurs with grants to expand their businesses . Alhaji Ben Abdallah Banda, Chairman of National Zongo Campaign for Bawumia and a former Member of Parliament, emphasized the effectiveness of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led administration at the forum. He critiqued the NDC's past efforts in these communities, particularly highlighting the perceived inadequacies in infrastructure development during their tenure. Banda challenged the NDC to present a counteraccount of their contributions to Zongo communities, accusing them of limiting their support to granting holidays for Muslims. Further addressing political accusations, Banda refuted claims circulated by the NDC suggesting that Vice President Bawumia supported LGBTQ+ practices due to the delayed assent to the LGBTQ+ Bill by President Akufo-Addo. He clarified that the delay was due to an ongoing Supreme Court case, reaffirming Bawumia's opposition to LGBTQ+ based on national customs and values. The NPP's commitment to the Zongo communities was also highlighted through historical references, noting the party' s consistent selection of Muslim running mates since 1979 and plans under Bawumia's potential presidency to construct an Islamic Senior High School in each of Ghana's 16 regions. Dr. Arafat Sulemana Abdulai, CEO of ZoDF, credited Bawumia with the original idea for the Zongo Development Fund, which was incorporated into the NPP's Manifestos since 2012. The forum, attended by Zongo chiefs, religious leaders, and community members, concluded with assurances from Banda that a Bawumia presidency would continue to prioritize development and inclusivity in Zongo communities, building on the foundations laid over the past seven years.
