Wechiau: During his campaign tour in the Wa West District, Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized that the economy and unemployment are pivotal issues for voters in the upcoming 2024 general elections in Ghana. Mahama criticized the current government's economic management and linked high unemployment rates to the ruling party's failures. According to Ghana News Agency, Mahama articulated these concerns while addressing a large crowd, including traditional leaders and party supporters. He highlighted the high unemployment rate, which stands over 14 percent, and the economic difficulties marked by rising inflation and exchange rates as clear indicators of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s failure. Mahama's comments came during a three-day campaign tour from Saturday, October 12 to Monday, October 14, 2024, which included visits to multiple districts in the region. The former President reflected on the lessons learned during the NDC's years out of power and urged Ghanaians to consider these lessons when voting in December 2024. He stressed the importance of making informed electoral decisions to secure a better future for the youth and the nation. Mahama also critiqued the NPP's unfulfilled promises from the 2016 elections and cautioned against being swayed by attractive promises in the upcoming election. In his campaign speeches, Mahama reminisced about the developmental initiatives undertaken during his presidency from 2009 to 2016 and expressed his desire to return to power to "rescue" and "reset" the country's development trajectory. Supporting Mahama's campaign, Superintendent (Rtd) Mr. Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Wa West Member of Parliament, promised local development in roads and employment if their party is elected.
