Techiman: Mr Kingsford Opoku Gyamfi, the Bono East Regional Director for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has revealed that approximately 64 percent of the population in the Bono East region is currently enrolled and active on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Gyamfi reported that the NHIS has registered 880,000 individuals out of the region’s estimated 1.3 million population. He emphasized that the NHIA is diligently working towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by the year 2030. Speaking at the NHIA’s first quarter review meeting in Techiman, Mr Gyamfi highlighted the NHIS’s goal to enroll 80 percent of the region’s population by the end of 2026.
Mr Gyamfi reiterated that the NHIS is the most reliable program for delivering healthcare services directly to the community and encouraged those not yet registered to join the scheme for access to quality healthcare services. He expressed optimism that with the rollout of the Primary Healthcare Programme, the nation is on track to achieve UHC, and called for stakeholder support to ensure the program’s sustainability.
Addressing the issue of co-payment, Mr Gyamfi noted that the NHIA, along with stakeholders, is making efforts to eliminate co-payment practices that hinder the NHIS’s implementation. He announced that the NHIS is offering free registration under the free primary healthcare programme from April 15 to April 31, 2026, urging residents to take this opportunity to register and benefit from the program.
