Techiman: Mr. Kingsford Opoku Gyamfi, the Bono East Regional Director for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has revealed that approximately 64 percent of the region's population is currently active on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He stated that the scheme has successfully registered 880,000 out of the roughly 1.3 million individuals residing in the region. The NHIA is striving to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by the year 2030.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gyamfi made this disclosure at the first quarter review meeting of the Authority held in Techiman. He further mentioned that the NHIS aims to enroll about 80 percent of the region's population by the end of 2026. Emphasizing the importance of the scheme, Mr. Gyamfi highlighted that the NHIS is the most reliable programme for delivering quality healthcare services directly to the people. He encouraged those who have not yet registered to do so in order to access quality healthcare services.
Mr. Gyamfi expressed optimism about achieving UHC through the implementation of the Primary Healthcare Programme and called for stakeholder support to ensure the program's sustainability. He also raised concerns about the issue of co-payment and noted that the NHIA, along with other stakeholders, is working diligently to address this challenge, which hinders the implementation of the NHIS.
Furthermore, Mr. Gyamfi announced that the NHIS is conducting a free registration drive under the free primary healthcare programme from April 15 to April 31, 2026, and urged the public to take advantage of this opportunity to register and benefit from the programme.
