2026 Commonwealth Games: Zinabu Bags Ghana’s First Medal in Glasgow

Accra: Ghana opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after para-athlete Zinabu Issah won silver in the women's F57 shot put. Issah produced a season-best throw of 8.65 metres in the final to secure second place in a competitive field, delivering Ghana's first podium finish of the competition. According to Ghana News Agency, India's Sharmila claimed the gold medal with a winning throw of 9.81 metres, while compatriot Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla secured bronze after recording 7.26 metres. Zinabu saved her best performance for the decisive stages of the event, showing consistency throughout the competition before registering her top mark of the season. The silver medal adds to Issah's growing list of international achievements and highlights the progress of Ghana's para sports programme. Speaking after the event, Zinabu expressed delight at her achievement and thanked Ghanaians for their support. "I am very happy. I have won gold medals at many competitions, but this silver medal at the Commonwealth Games means even more to me because it is my first time competing here. I want to thank Ghanaians for their support. I was very confident of winning a medal because I know what it takes to be on the podium," she said. Zinabu's success is expected to provide a boost for the Ghanaian team as the Games enter their sixth day. Ghana would now look to add to its medal tally in athletics and boxing, where several athletes remain in contention for podium finishes.
