Accra Digital Center becomes latest victim of ECG disconnection over debt

With many big corporate names already being victims of the recent disconnection exercises of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Accra Digital Center has become its latest culprit.

The exercise, which was undertaken on the morning of Monday, April 17, 2023, was because the Center owed the power company a substantial amount of money for unpaid power use.

According to a myjoyonline.com report, the action was undertaken by the Accra West Region office of the ECG as part of their revenue drive aimed at complementing a national effort at recovering some GH¢5.7 million owed by its customers.

The areas that the ECG targeted for its Monday activity are those around the North Industrial Area in Accra.

It will be recalled that the ECG has stated recently that unless it can pay off an outstanding $1 billion it owes some Independent Power Producers (IPP), it risks a major shutdown.

The revenue mobilisation drive has so far helped the ECG retrieve GH¢2.5 million of unpaid debts across the country, the report added.

118 NPP MPs, including myself, support Bawumia – Deputy Speaker of Parliament

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has said that majority of the Members of Parliament of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to become president.

Speaking in an Oyerepa TV interview monitored by GhanaWeb, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who is affectionately called Joewise, said that he is one of the over 100 MPs who are supporting the presidential bid of Dr Bawumia.

“Most of the NPP MPs at the last count were about 118 MPs and I am one of them. I speak for myself and my support for Bawumia, and I know over 100 NPP MPs also support Bawumia,” he told the morning show host of Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Kwesi Parker-Wilson.

He added that declaring his support for Bawumia does not violate the party’s order against active campaigning because most of the presidential candidates themselves have started campaigning.

According to him, the leadership of the party itself have called him to organise delegates in his constituency to meet some of the presidential hopeful including Kennedy Agyapong.

Joewise also refuted the assertion that the declaration of support to persons who will be contesting in the presidential primaries, which is slated for November 4, 2023, will divide the NPP.

The likes of former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen Assin, Central MP Ken Agyapong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, ex-Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh, and former Regional Cooperation Minister Dr. Kofi Konadu Apreku are expected to face off in the race for the flagbearership position of the NPP.

2024 Elections: Alan Kyerematen is the man to beat Mahama – NPP’s Nana Boakye

Former Chairman of the Tema West Constituency branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Amfo-Sefah, has urged his party to be “scientific” in electing its next flagbearer and in doing so, “be guided by the current wave of polls” in the country.

In a write-up on social media, Mr. Amfo-Sefah, who is popularly called Nana Boakye, said such guidance will inevitably lead to the election of former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen as the party’s next flagbearer.

“As the polls show, Mr. Kyerematen is the most winsome candidate option that we have against the NDC’s John Mahama who, compared to Bawumia, is leading Alan Kyerematen in the national voter opinion by 54 percent to 40 percent compared to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in which case it is 55 percent to 38 percent,” Nana Boakye wrote.

He added, “let us be guided by science and objective analyses rather than emotions and power-worship so we can break the 8 and make the history we have set our hearts upon.”

Nana Boakye’s advice comes after the latest poll by popular polling company, Global Info Analytics, showed that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is a hair’s breadth more popular than Alan Kyerematen within the NPP, however, Alan Kyerematen is a more popular choice for the presidency among Ghanaian voters in general than Vice President Bawumia.

According to the survey report, within the NPP, Dr. Bawumia attracts 39% of voters compared to Alan’s 37%. However, among national voters, Alan Kyerematen has the upper hand with 30% as compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 29%.

The poll also said former President John Mahama leads all NPP potential candidates in attractiveness among national voters with 54% to Alan Kyerematen’s 40% and 55% to Dr. Bawumia’s 38%.

“AKK still leads DMB, 30 percent to 29 percent among all voters. However, among NPP affiliates, DMB still has slender lead over AKK. DMB now attracts 39 percent of NPP votes, AKK attracts 37 percent and KOA, 23 percent.

“However, in the event of runoff, the poll shows AKK leading DMB 57 percent to 43 percent among all voters and by 53 percent to 47 percent among NPP voters.

“For the general elections, JDM leads all the NPP frontrunners. JDM leads AKK 54 percent to 40 percent with further 6 percent intend to vote for someone else. JDM also leads DMB 55 percent to 38 percent; 7 percent intend to vote for someone else,” the polls report said.

Nana Boakye expressed happiness that things are looking this way even though Alan Kyerematen has not really kick-started his campaign yet, while in the case of Vice President Bawumia, by virtue of his position in office, is already as good as campaigning.

“It just tells us that when Alan kicks his campaign into full motion, he will easily overtake Vice President Bawumia in the winsomeness within the NPP and also has a better chance of overtaking the NDC’s John Mahama,” Nana Boakye wrote.

He therefore reiterated his call on the party, “to put our best foot forward by electing Alan Kwodwo Kyerematen to win power for our great party, the NPP.”

1D1F: After seven years we still import toothpicks – Kwesi Pratt

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has berated the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government over its implementation of its flagship One District, One Factory programme (1D1F).

Speaking in an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, monitored by GhanaWeb, Kwesi Pratt said that even though he takes no delight in criticising the government, the 1D1F after seven years of implementation has had a meaningful impact on Ghana’s economy.

He explained that the programme was not targeted and has not fundamentally impacted Ghana’s economy, with the country still importing meagre things like toothpicks.

The veteran journalist, who is the managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, added that if proper steps are not taken to transfer Ghana’s economy, the country will continue running to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help.

“Look, what we need to do is to industrialise in a way which changes the order of things now.

“All of these One District, One Factory factories, how have they been able to alter our import dependence? As we sit here, when you go to every supper market… you find drinking water being imported.

“Toothpicks are still being imported; this is after 7 years of One District, One Factory, seven years! Where are we going,” he asked.

He added that the factories under the programme should be able to have an impact on Ghana’s economy like the Atuabo Gas Plant, which significantly affected the country’s dependence on gas imports.

“The Atuabo project is one project, and yet it had a fundamental impact on the economy,” he said.
