2023 ECOSOG Youth Summit: Mustapha Ussif highlights Ghana’s progress in water and sanitation

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has told the 2023 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum in New York, strives Ghana has made, through youth-centred policies towards realising its water and sanitation goals.

Responding to a question on Tuesday, 25th April on “How are young people supported to achieve Ghana’s National vision for the water and sanitation sector, focusing on sustainable basic water and sanitation service for all,’ Mustapha Ussif stated that the goal of the Government of Ghana for the water and sanitation sector is “to contribute to the improvement in the living standards of Ghanaians through increased access to and use of safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices and sustainable management of water resources.”

He indicated that the Government, through various agencies such as the Ghana Water Company and its sector ministry, the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, have over the years deployed several strategies to improve access and coverage of potable water in rural and urban communities, promote effective liquid and solid waste management, and promote sustainable sanitation and water resources for all.

“In Ghana, we have set a national vision to provide sustainable basic water and sanitation services for all. This vision is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all,” he said.

He added: “To achieve this vision, we recognize that young people are a crucial component. Young people are the future of our country, and their energy, creativity, and innovation are vital to solving the challenges we face in the water and sanitation sector.”

Highlighting several programs and policies by the Government of Ghana, the minister listed many policies and programs, including the Coastal Sanitation Assistants, Youth in Sanitation, and The Rural Sanitation Module and Strategy (RSMS), among others.

“Greater Accra Sustainable Sanitation and Livelihood Improvement Project (GASSLIP), Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GAMASWP) and Greater Accra Resilience and Integrated Development (GARID) Project have also been implemented with strong involvement and participation of young people”, he added.

“We have taken several steps to support young people in achieving our national vision for water and sanitation. First, we have prioritized youth employment in the water and sanitation sector. We recognize that young people need opportunities to gain practical experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in this field. Through various programs and initiatives, we are providing training and employment opportunities for young people in the water and sanitation sector.

“In conclusion, he indicated that the National Youth Authority (NYA) launched the National Youth Volunteer Programme to ignite the spirit of selflessness and volunteerism amongst young people in Ghana. The programme will see the implementation of modules such as infrastructure, environment, climate change and disaster risk management; and education, through empowering the youth to contribute to improving the environmental and sanitation conditions of communities.”

‘You are mad’ – Gary Neville clashes with Jamie Carragher over Alex Fergusson claims

Manchester United legend Gary Neville and his Liverpool counterpart, Jamie Carragher are slugging it out on Twitter over the latter’s claim that Sir Alex Fergusson cannot be put in the list of greatest football coaches ever.

Jamie Carragher on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, stated that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are three games away from joining era-defining teams.

The former Liverpool defender named Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan, Johan Cryuff’s Barcelona, and Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona of 2009 as his greatest teams.

“If #ManCity win the treble or the #ChampionsLeague will this era of success for Pep mean his team join the great teams who changed the game? Sacchi Milan, Cryuff Barcelona, Pep Barcelona, Pep Man City,” Jamie Carragher tweeted.

Responding to the question, Jamie Carragher stated that he did not add Sir Alex Fergusson and his team because the achievement of Fergusson did not impact the sport in any way.

“The Man Utd treble team did not influence European football!!! Those other teams/managers are still talked about today in terms of influencing the current generation of managers & tactics.”

‘Female celebrities dating same men unknowingly’ – Popular businessman discloses

Popular Music Executive, Ubi Franklin, has asserted that many Nigerian female celebrities are dating the same men unknowingly.

He made this statement in a post on his Instastory.

According to him, most female celebrities date wealthy married men with flashy lifestyles just so they could brag on social media.

He said, in the quest to live lavishly on social media, most of these women end up dating the same men.

The Triple MG boss narrated an instance where he flew with a female celebrity from London to Nigeria, and she was with a married man who is dating her other colleagues.

Franklin wrote: “What’s crazy about our female celebrities is, they date the same men unknowingly, they be thinking they are private and no one knows their business. Just to pepper us on sm [social media]. I flew with one, one day from London to Naija and she was with some1 husband.”

Franklin added that although he is not judging them, they should do proper checks about whom they are dating.

He asked the ‘loud women’ to learn from other ladies who are dating wealthier men but don’t flaunt their lifestyle on social media to intimidate people.

Adams Mahama murder trial: Asabke Alangdi sentenced to death, Afoko gets retrial

One of the prime suspects in the murder of Adams Mahama, a former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2015, Asabke Alangdi, has been sentenced to death by the Accra High Court.

According to a news report by graphic.com.gh, Alangdi was unanimously found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder by a seven-member jury on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

The second prime suspect in the murder of Adams Mahama, Gregory Afoko, who was alleged to have conspired with Asabke, will face another trial after the jury did not find him guilty.

The jury returned to the court with a 4:3 verdict; finding Afoko not guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The report indicated that, according to Criminal Procedure Act, 1960 (Act 30), a verdict of 4:3 by a jury in a murder trial means it is a hung jury and there must be a retrial.

The lawyers for the accused person sentenced to death, Asabke, have indicated that they will appeal the ruling of the court.

They wondered why the jury would find one person guilty and the other not guilty for the same offence.

“How can a person conspire against himself, be found guilty and the person that he was accused of conspiring with is found not guilty,” one of the lawyers is quoted by graphic.com.gh.

Background

Asabke Alangde was believed to have conspired with Gregory Afoko to kill Adams Mahama on May 15, 2015.

Mahama died after he was doused in acid in front of his home in the capital town of the Upper East Region, Bolgatanga.

Alangde fled the shores of Ghana after the murder and was arrested in 2019 by Ghana’s security agencies in collaboration with Interpol in Ivory Coast.

Afoko, was, however, apprehended by the Ghana Police Service in 2015 after the murder and has been on trial since.
