We must allow Chris Hughton free hands to select the best players to deliver for Ghana – Cudjoe Fianoo

Experienced football administrator, Cudjoe Fianoo is backing new Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton to do a good job.

He, however, believes that the coach must be allowed free hands to select players that can deliver for the country.

“I’m not cutting you (questioner) short but football is not parliament that every constituency must be represented,” Cudjoe Fianoo said.

The chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) was speaking on the sidelines of an event attended by footballghana.com.

Cudjoe Fianoo believes that it should not matter whether a player is selected from the local league or from abroad.

He is of the view that once the player is selected by the coach the team must be supported.

“Let’s leave the coach to pick players that can deliver. If the player is a local player, fine. If the player is not a local player, we want people who will wear the Black Stars jersey and bring us joy.

“If the colour is white, green or whatever, we want Ghanaians to play for the Black Stars and take us to where we want to get to,” the GHALCA boss said.

Coach Chris Hughton and his Black Stars will not be in action until June when the qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON resume.

The Accra-based side have already changed managers but their story looks quite unchanged as they continue to struggle for positive results.

The skipper, Kasim Razak is however confident their problems are not too far from being solved.

“We had some issues at the beginning of the season which has affected us a lot. But as time goes on we will try to solve the issues. Everything will be fine. I always try to maintain unity in the team. Things will soon be better,” he told 3Sports.

The Oly Dade lads are just three points above the relegation zone with 31 points.

In their remaining nine fixtures, they will play Aduana Stars and Kotoko among other top teams before the end of the season.

Kobby Mensah’s men have won only twice in their last ten matches, making them the worst Ghana Premier League side in that period.

Don’t pressure Chris Hughton to include local players in Black Stars squad – Kudjoe Fianoo

The President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, has spoken out against calls to force local players on new Ghana boss Chris Hughton.

Fianoo urged Ghanaians to trust the coach’s decision when it comes to selecting players for the national team.

“I’m not cutting you (questioner) short but football is not parliament that every constituency must be represented,” Fianoo said at the sidelines of an event attended by footballghana.com.

“Let’s leave the coach to pick players that can deliver. If the player is a local player, fine. If the player is not a local player, we want people who will wear the Black Stars jersey and bring us joy.”

Fianoo emphasized that the most important factor is that players who wear the Black Stars jersey represent Ghana and bring the country success on the international stage.

“If the colour is white, green or whatever, we want Ghanaians to play for the Black Stars and take us to where we want to get to,” he said.

Hughton recently named his first Ghana squad for last month’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying header without a home-based player, which led to criticism from some quarters.

However, Fianoo’s comments suggest that he supports the coach’s decision and wants Ghanaians to trust him to pick the players who can lead the country to success.
