Court remands two persons over fraud

Accra, Oct. 24, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two persons into police custody for the fraudulent transaction of land.

Mr Victor Senyagloh, a 71-year-old farmer, who pleaded guilty to all charges, and Mr James Asante, a 65-year-old engineer, who denied the charges against him, were remanded into police custody to reappear on October 25, 2022.

Mr Christian Swaniker, a 76-year-old Architect, was absent and the court presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The three were jointly being held for conspiracy to defraud and fraudulent transaction of land.

Mr Senyagloh pleaded guilty, and the Court convicted him on his plea, but the sentence was deferred.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Teye Okuffo told the Court that the complainant, Mr Razak Mohammed, is a businessman and resides in East Legon.

The prosecution said the complainant was into estates and had houses at Abelemkpe.

Inspector Okuffo said in February 2022, Mr Senyagloh approached the complainant and told him that, his brother, Mr Dogbe (at large) was the owner of a piece of land behind the complainant’s ongoing project and offered the land to the complainant for sale.

The prosecution said they agreed to 40,000.00 dollars as the selling price of the land.

Inspector Okuffo said the complainant made part payment of 10,000.00 dollars to Mr Senyagloh and Dogbe.

The prosecution said the complainant after the payment, requested Mr Senyagloh to cut down a tree, which was on the land and immediately the tree was cut down, while another person came up and claimed ownership of the land and substantiated his claim with a document from the Swaniker Family.

Inspector Okuffo said the complainant lost interest in the land and requested a refund of his money, but they failed.

The prosecution said the complainant reported Mr Senyagloh to the Police and he mentioned Mr Asante and Mr Swaniker as his accomplices whom he shared the money with.

Inspector Okuffo said during the investigation, the accused persons refunded 5,000.00 dollars to the complainant through the Police.

The prosecution said efforts were being made to apprehend Mr Dogbe to assist in investigations.

Five Warehouses under Government Flagship programme in Upper East underutilised

Bolgatanga, Oct. 24, GNA – Five Warehouses built under the Government of Ghana’s Flagship Programme, “One District, One Warehouse (1D1W) in the Upper East Region is being under-utilised.

The 1,000 tonne capacity Warehouses, constructed for each constituency in the various Agricultural Districts under the Infrastructure Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP), is aimed at enhancing food security, reducing post-harvest loses and improving the agricultural sector.

Mr Francis Ennor, the Regional Director, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, who spoke in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, on the status of the warehouses said they had been handed over and taken by the buffer stock.

The Regional Director said some individual farmers, influenced by cultural practices, did not like to expose their produce to the public so everyone would know the quantity of food they harvested, hence the low patronage.

He said farmers were still being sensitised on the cooperative system to improve their participation in the use of the facilities.

The warehouses are in the Talensi district, Nabdam district, Builsa North and South as well as the Garu district while the on- going projects were that of the Bongo district and Kassena Nankana West district in Paga, he added.

The Director said for the five warehouses that had been handed to the buffer stock, plans were in place to buy and stock grains for the school feeding programme and for storage of food for the country as a whole.

He said procedural plans on how best to use the warehouses were being drafted for some individuals, who had shown interest to use the facilities for storage, adding that opportunities exist for private persons to utilise the facilities for storage of food.

He said the government was drafting proposals to either operate the facilities on private partnership basis or for the District Assemblies to do so.

Mr Ennor said due to high rice production in the Builsa South, the facility there had been allocated to support the farmers to store surplus produce.

Meanwhile, the Nabdam district warehouse in 2021 suffered some damage as a result of rainstorm, which affected some parts of the building.

On general performance of crops in this years’ cropping season, the Director said maize production had been good but rice production was reduced.

The accused persons; Elizabeth Acquah, a 55-year-old woman and John Prince Danso, a 31-year-old, are both unemployed.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them.

The case has been adjourned to November 29, 2022.

Police Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, prosecutor of the case, told the Court that the complainant, Mr Victor Essel, is a development Officer and resided at Teshie.

Inspector Alorwu said in 2021, Elizabeth sold a piece of land located at Spintex road area to the complainant at the cost of GHS 170,000.

The prosecution said the complainant after making full payment started constructing a fence wall around the land and on February 2, 2022, the complainant visited the land and found out that Danso had damaged the fence wall value at GHS 10,000.

The prosecution said the complainant after further investigations realised  that the said land belonged to Elizabeth’s husband, who was separated from her for 22 years and all the land documents were still in his name.

Inspector Alorwu said the complainant contacted the husband for his consent, but he refused, and this made it difficult for the complainant to develop the land.

The prosecution said the complainant then demanded a refund from Elizabeth, but she could not do that.

Inspector Alorwu said the complainant then lodged a case against the accused persons who were subsequently arrested.

The prosecution said during investigations, Elizabeth claimed she contributed to the purchase of the land and that she used the proceeds to educate one of her sons in school.

Inspector Alorwu said Danso also claimed his father had given him power of attorney over the land.

Don’t wear uniform for political activities – GRNMA to trainee nurses

Bolgatanga, Oct. 24, GNA – The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has cautioned trainee nurses to desist from wearing their uniforms to attend political rallies and activities.

The Association’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Mr Thomas Lambon, who gave the caution, expressed concern that some student nurses were seen in uniform at political programmes, an act he said was unhealthy to the nursing profession.

According to him, “Once some members of the public see you in the uniform, they conclude you are a nurse, meanwhile you are still under training that is why the GRNMA is very concerned.”

Mr Lambon was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of first- and second-year trainee nurses of the Nursing Training College (NTC), Bolgatanga.

He said the Association was not against its members, nursing and midwifery trainee’s involvement in politics, but indicated that the uniform must not be worn for political activities.

He said the nature of the nursing and midwifery profession enjoined them to render care to every member of the public without any form of discrimination and must not be seen in uniform engaged in political activities.

“At least everyone has a Party they support, and the Association is not against that, but we do not want to see you in uniform at political programmes.

“If the politicians visit your school that is fine, because you are in school but we do not support the use of the uniform for political activities outside your campus,” he emphasized.

The Association’s Chair called on all Principals of Nursing Training Colleges to ensure that the nursing uniform was not used for political activities outside their campuses.

He urged the matriculants to concentrate on their studies and not rely on stakeholders, especially Chiefs and politicians, to intervene on their behalf if they failed to meet the required marks to be registered for their licencing examination.

The GRNMA Chairman said the Association was concerned about their training, and would continue to encourage them to learn, as that was the only way they could graduate successfully as professional nurses.

“Learn and pass well, so that you will be registered to write your final examination and pass out as a professional nurse and join the GRNMA, which is the mother Association for nurses and midwives in Ghana,” he said.

Radio presenter fights breast cancer among market women in Takoradi

Tanokrom (WR), Oct. 24, GNA – Ms Chelsy Sey, a broadcast journalist with the Global Media Alliance, has organized a breast cancer screening and awareness creation exercise dubbed, “Boobs Up Campaign” for market women at the Jubilee Market in Takoradi.

The “Boobs Up Campaign” initiative under the Boss Up 100 Foundation, was aimed at sensitizing women on the need to get screened for both breast and cervical cancer which were the most common cancers in women.

Ms Chelsy Sey in an interview, noted that though a lot of sensitizations had gone on, many women in the informal sector especially, market women found it difficult to move to the health facilities to get screened, hence the need to take the project to them.

She explained that the highest cause of premature mortality among women in the world was breast and cervical cancer making both cancers a major health problem for women.

According to her, when diagnosed early, both breast and cervical cancer could be successfully treated and managed effectively.

“There is a risk that every woman will develop breast and cervical cancer. Various risk factors can affect the susceptibility of each woman,” she stated.

She mentioned that early menarche, late menopause, late childbirth, oral contraceptives, and hormonal therapy for menopause as well as high alcohol intake increased the risk of breast cancer.

Ms Sey explained that research added that the impact of diet and environmental factors were some probable causes of the disease and stated that frequent participation in screening services was a major intervention for the prompt and appropriate management of women with abnormalities.

The free screening exercise, which was organized in collaboration with Nana Care Solutions, screened more than 100 women of which some were referred to health facilities for check-ups.

Plastic Surgeon leads team to conduct free reconstructive surgery for 200 in Volta

Accra, Oct.24, GNA – A team led by Dr Michael K. Obeng, a world-renowned plastic surgeon of the RESTORE Worldwide, Inc, the Foundation for Reconstructive Surgery, has conducted free reconstructive surgery for 200 patients in the Volta region.

The Surgeons conducted 135 surgical operations, dental tooth extractions, and chiropractic skeletal manipulations within four and a half working days.

The 33-member team of volunteers comprised a dentist and chiropractor, seven surgeons, an internist, a general practitioner, two anesthesiologists, a nurse anesthetist, a physician assistant, two surgical nurses, three surgical technologists, and four registered nurses.

The team prior to the surgery screened more than 500 patients from across the country.

A statement from RESTORE Worldwide copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the team from different backgrounds met in Ghana from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Mali, Senegal, and Ghana.

Dr John Tampuori, the Chief Executive Officer, Ho Teaching Hospital and an Urologist said: “When the RESTORE team told me about their lofty target of 120 surgeries, I was a bit skeptical, but they have done what ‘God’ can do.”

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, expressed gratitude to the team when he witnessed at first-hand, the lives that were transformed.

“I will make sure the RESTORE team comes to this area every single year whether I am in government or not. I will like to see my people happy.

“I am delighted that a good number of our compatriots outside the Volta Region also benefited. We are eternally indebted to Dr. Obeng and the RESTORE team,” he added.

Dr Obeng said: “I know we can do better as a country. Ghana has some of the most brilliant minds and most of our natural resources are untapped. There is a great amount of wealth in this country and our people should have better access to health. Health is wealth and a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.”

The statement noted that there were a preponderance of thyroid-related diseases (goiters), gigantic facial tumors, burn scar deformities causing functional impairment as well as unprecedented number of ambiguous genitalia, which carried with it social stigmatisation that had prompted most of the subsets of patients contemplating suicide.

On Wednesday, October 12, the team successfully conducted the first gender re-affirmation surgery, the first of its kind in the Region on a 19-year true intersex (hermaphrodite) who had been living as a girl since birth.

Another major procedure executed by the team was a hemi-maxillectomy, followed by Reconstruction on an elderly woman with a tumor engulfing half of her face.

The team, according to the statement, successfully removed a tumor from an 11-year-old boy that wrapped around cranial nerves 11 & 12 and the common carotid artery at its bifurcation, a surgery that had been attempted twice by local surgeons, but with futility because of the vital structures mentioned above.

Dr Paa Ekow Hoyte-Williams of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Director of Medical Affairs for the RESTORE team, expressed satisfaction with the success chalked by the mission and the safety measures it had implemented to prevent catastrophes.  “All these were life-transforming surgeries, and it is an amazing initiative because all these have been done at no cost to the patients,” he said.

This mission also saw a large number of German volunteers led by Dr. Mehmet Atila of Medical Inn in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The team conducted 111 surgeries in Dakar, Senegal in December 2021 and was expected to perform the next exercise in Cameroon in February 2023.

The trip included a group of surgeons like Colonel Dr Raccine Kane, Professor, and Head of Urology of L’Hopital de Dakar, Senegal, Dr Dembele, Chief of Plastic Surgery in Mali dubbed by the team ‘The Machine’ for his surgical prowess, and Dr Marco from Germany.
