Legon Botanical Gardens: A rare sight of nature in the heart of Accra

Accra is known to be a very busy commercial centre with many activities taking place, but in the heart of it also lies a rare sight of ecological beauty called the Legon Botanical Gardens.

The 49.89-hectare garden is gradually becoming a hot destination for tourism in Accra due to the numerous fun and educational activities it offers.

Mr. Charles Amoako Asare, Manager of the Gardens, said various academic institutions visit the garden to collect samples of their plants, and soil, among other natural resources for research purposes.

“Lots of institutions, including the Atomic Research Institute and some departments of the University of Ghana, come here and pick samples from the dam and environment for research purposes.

“We do have an alliance with BirdLife Ghana of the Ghana Wildlife Society where they bring groups to do bird watching at the gardens,” he said.

Mr. Asare further stated that the garden provides several recreational activities for the public and there were plans in place to add new ones.

“There are social and recreational activities which people can explore, including canopy walks, bird watching, canoeing, ziplining, and an event woodland where people can host their events in the woods.

“A pleasant surprise awaits visitors to the gardens as they would be thrilled with the kind of social and educational aspects the garden provides,” Mr. Asare said.

He added that children who often visit the gardens are taught how important it is to keep their environment clean and also inculcate this in them.

He was optimistic that the gardens had a huge potential to boost domestic tourism as they currently attract over 12,000 locals every month.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Kofi Boakye, the Chief Executive Officer of the Legon Botanical Gardens, talked about how the gardens had been redeveloped, as it was once a huge rubbish dump yard back in the 90s.

“I am certainly overwhelmed with the transformation of the gardens, something I didn’t dream of at the start.

“It was a huge site for the refuse dump, and many people thought it would be impossible to redevelop this place, but with the help of some people, the gardens has been redeveloped into a place where people can come and have fun, and it also employs more than 50 people,” he said.

The Legon Botanical Gardens provide lots of thrills, including an opportunity to walk on the widest canopy walkway in Ghana, which is 13m high and 138m long.

A ride on the canoe provides an amazing cruising experience for visitors on the dam, who would?often see some lizard species, and squirrels, among others.

Private Health Sector is key to making Ghana Medical Tourism Hub-Minister

Accra, June 29, GNA – Mr Kwaku Agyeman Manu, the Minister of Health, has called for a strategic collaboration with the Private Health Sector towards making the country a “Medical Tourism Hub” in the sub-region.

The Minister, who made the call at the “Second Private Health Sector Summit 2022”, in Accra, in a speech read on his behalf, said the Ministry was developing a policy to position Ghana in that regard.

The Hub will entail pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, finance, healthcare, and other relevant areas that enhance healthcare.

Mr Manu, who said government was committed to facilitating collective participation of the private sector, admonished them and all stakeholders to align efforts towards implementation of the National Health Policy and Universal Health Coverage(UHC) roadmap.

He commended the private sector for its contribution towards healthcare, especially in areas such as health promotion, finance, supply chain, and human development, that government could not have tackled solely.

To enable the Ministry obtain reliable national health data for decision making and intervention, the Minister called on all stakeholders to share vital information for the tracking of progress, saying that could enhance the step towards attainment of UHC.

The Ministry, he said, was opened to receiving proposals from the private sector and development partners to enhance healthcare delivery.

Dr Amit N. Thakker, Chairman of the Africa Health Business, in a keynote address via a virtual platform, reiterated the importance of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) in the health sector.

He noted that there were some African countries that had successfully reduced their COVID-19 case mortality from five per cent to one per cent, including Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, through PPP.

He said there had also been access to technology, human resource and skills, expansion of access to quality health service, access to finance, realisation of the New Public Health Order for Africa, and promotion of ownership of health programmes at the local level through PPP.

Under the New Public Health Order for Africa, there were action-oriented partnerships, investment in public health workforce and leadership programmes, a strengthened Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Public Health Institutions and expanded manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics, he said.

Dr Thakker expressed optimism that Africa would rise to the point where it no longer imported 99 per cent of its vaccines but produced at least 60 per cent of them latest by 2030 and called for stronger PPP across the continent to realise the dream.

Dr Alexander Martin-Odoom, President, Private Health Sector Alliance of Ghana, said it was unfortunate that the Alliance had been dormant for a few years now due to COVID-19, lack of infrastructure and financial stress.

He said the private sector had put together a “buffet” of ideas for deliberations at the summit, he said, and expressed the hope that the summit produced interventions to re-fuel the private health sector towards the attainment of UHC.

Dr Yisa Barnabas, Resident Representative, UNFPA, said 25 per cent of health care was delivered by private health facilities.

The private sector was also instrumental in creating relief to sustain government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the UNFPA, Dr Barnabas said strengthening the relationship with the private sector was paramount to achieving a zero maternal mortality, zero unmet needs of family planning and zero gender-based violence.

Funding partners of Ghana’s health sector had reduced, hence a stronger PPP was pivotal to make it possible for government to secure funding and logistics for the sector, he said.

Dr Holger Till, Health Advisor, GIZ Ghana, commended the Ministry of Health for the step to seek more collaboration, as partnership with the academics, civil society organisations, private health sector, and development partners was the best to ensuring that workers in the sector were healthy to deliver healthy output for a healthy population.

We will organize Top 4 and not Top 6 – GHALCA Chairman Kudjoe Fianoo

Ghana League Club Association [GHALCA] Chairman, Kudjoe Fianoo has confirmed that his outfit will organize a Top 4 pre-season tournament for clubs and not Top 6 as speculated.

GHALCA over the years have been organizing a tournament for clubs who finished in the top four in the Ghana Premier League ahead of every new season.

The tournament in the past served as a preparatory ground for clubs that will be representing the country in Africa.

Asante Kotoko, Medeama SC, Bechem United, and Karela United finished in the top four in the just-ended season.

However, the discussion has taken a different turn after Hearts of Oak failed to finish in the top four but won the FA Cup, beating Bechem United to annex the trophy.

With Samuel Boadu and his charges set to represent the country in the 2022/23 CAF Confederations Cup, it has been argued that Hearts of Oak, who finished 6th with 48 points and Great Olympics finished 5th must be included in the pre-season tournament, making it Top 6.

However, Kudjoe Fianoo speaking in an interview has categorically reiterated that only the top four clubs will compete in the pre-season tournament.

By this decision, Hearts of Oak will be out of the pre-season tournament despite representing the country in Africa.

“The Ghana League Club Association [GHALCA] will organize a ‘Top 4,’ and not ‘Top 6’ preseason competition,” he told Kumasi-based Kessben FM.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko who won the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League will represent the country in the CAF Champions League.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Dr. Randy Abbey has expressed optimism that the Black Stars will put up a good performance at the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast next year.
