A crèche facility inaugurated for Golden Exotic workers’ children

Kasunya (G/A), March 23, GNA – A crèche facility has been inaugurated at the Golden Exotic Limited (GEL) at Kasunya in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

The facility was sponsored by Fairtrade Premium Committee (FPC), a global movement that addresses the injustices of conventional trade, to fulfil a promise made to the workers.

It also formed part of activities to mark International Women’s Day.

Mr George Kporye, Fairtrade Officer in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the provision of the crèche would help enhance the production of the company as the female workers would have enough time at work while their children were taken care of.

He said the gesture fell within the GEL parent’s company, Compagnie Fruitiere’s gender equity policy, which aimed at providing a congenial atmosphere at the workplace for women.

He said the FPC had provided a 30-seater bus to transport parents, particularly mothers from their work premises within the enclave of the GEL during break time to the school to feed their children and return to work.

Mr Benedict John Rich, the Managing Director of GEL, said an educationist, three trained teachers in early childhood education and three class attendants have been respectively engaged to operate the school.

He said the provision of the facility came about when the research was commissioned in 2017 for reasons of a low number of women in GEL, which led to policy development to improve conditions of engagement, particularly for women after a consultative meeting.

Mr Rich expressed the hope that the Fairtrade Premium Committee would continue to apply its resources to support similar projects in the future to enhance the general welfare and economic wellbeing of the GEL workers.

Otwetiri Community appeals for potable drinking water

Otwetire (E/R), March 23, GNA – The Otwetiri Community in the Akuapim North Municipality of the Eastern Region has petitioned the municipal assembly for the provision of piped water and a waste disposal site in the community.

The community of about 1000 people, mostly cassava and maize farmers, rely on the Otwetiri River as their primary source of water for both domestic and commercial use.

Mrs Emelia Akaglo, a member of Victory Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), stated this during a program organised by the International Child Advocacy Programme (ICDP) in collaboration with Zonta of Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

She stated that the river was unable to supply enough water to the community due to the community’s growing population.

Again, the community lacked a waste management site to increase their willingness to practice personal and environmental hygiene, though she noted efforts were being made.

Mrs Akaglo said, “despite the fact that we have been sensitised to the importance of cleanliness, we do not have a proper dumping site in the community.”

She praised People for Health for educating the community on the importance of keeping the environment clean in order to ensure and promote good health.

People for Health is a non-governmental organization that empowers ordinary Ghanaians to express their concerns about healthcare delivery.

Mr Yohanes Akaglo, Vice Chairman of VSLA, said the river was frequently polluted by trash carried by the rains into the river, making it unsafe for human consumption.

He said villagers frequently cleaned the river to make it safe for drinking, and that during the dry season, villagers formed a long queue at the river’s bank just to fetch water for the house.

He added that the association was yet to receive a response from the municipality after sending the letter to the assembly two weeks ago.

Nonetheless, he appealed to well-wishers and other organizations to assist in providing portable drinking water to Otwetiri community.

Ghana commemorates World TB Day

Accra, March 23, GNA-Ghana will join the rest of the world tomorrow in commemorating the 2022 World TB Day celebration. TB is a disease caused by germs that spread from person to person through the air.

Accra, March 23, GNA-Ghana will join the rest of the world tomorrow in commemorating the 2022 World TB Day celebration.

TB is a disease caused by germs that spread from person to person through the air. It usually affects the lungs but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, or the spine.

Symptoms include coughing for two weeks or more, sweating at night, fever and chills, chest pains, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss and fever.

World TB Day, which falls on March 24 every year seeks to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.

This year’s celebration is on the theme “Invest to End TB. Save Lives”.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers.

It is estimated that each day, about 4,010 people lose their lives to TB across the world and 28,000 get infected as estimated by WHO.

In 2021, Ghana recorded an estimated 44,000 new cases, out of this 13,332 were the actual cases on treatment, 30,668 cases were missing. An estimated 4,400 children got infected with 645 on treatment and about 12,000 people died undiagnosed.

Dr Adwoa Asante Poku, a Senior Research Fellow Noguchi Memorial Institute University of Ghana, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that World TB day is, therefore, a significant occasion for all health workers, partners, researchers, the TB community and all governments who contribute their resources to the fight against TB.

She said the 2022 theme is, conveys the need for world leaders to understand that without adequate financial resources, the fight against TB could not be won and reverse the severe impact of COVID-19.

The disruptions caused by the pandemic have led to decreased number of people diagnosed and treated for TB, and dangerously affected the rights of people with TB, the Researcher said.

Dr Poku said TB is curable and therefore cautioned that any person coughing for any duration with one or more TB symptoms should report to the nearest health facility.

“We should try to avoid overcrowded rooms and ensure proper ventilation. TB patients should be encouraged to complete treatment rather than being ostracized,” she stated.

This date was set aside in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB).

Since then, Ghana together with the rest of the world have been celebrating World TB Day annually to create the needed awareness in solidarity of persons who have been affected, survived, and even lost their lives to the disease.
