Obesity Day: WHO urges countries to create affordable healthy diet environment

Accra,– The World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged countries to create a better food environment to enable people have access to healthy diets towards fighting overweight and obesity.

Creating a better food environment includes restricting the marketing of food and drinks high in fats, sugar and salt, taxing sugary drinks for children, and providing better access to affordable, healthy foods for all citizens.

The WHO made the call on Friday March 4, 2022, as the world joined forces to observe the 2022 World Obesity Day on the theme: “Accelerating Action to Stop Obesity.”

It defines overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that might impair health and body mass index (BMI), as a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults.

BMI, in other words, is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2).

Even though obesity is preventable, the Organization reported that more than one billion people worldwide were obese comprising 650 million adults, 340 million adolescents and 39 million children.

The number, it said, was still increasing and estimated that by 2025, approximately 167 million people – adults and children, would become less healthy because they were overweight or obese.

Obesity, as a disease impacting most body systems affects the heart, liver, kidneys, joints, and reproductive system, WHO said.

It also led to a range of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, various forms of cancer, as well as mental health issues and people with obesity are also three times more likely to be hospitalised for COVID-19.

The key to preventing obesity, WHO said, was to act early ideally even before a baby was conceived.

Moreover, good nutrition in pregnancy, followed by exclusive breastfeeding until the age of six months and continued breastfeeding until two years and beyond, was best for all infants and young children.

To reduce the risks of being obese, the WHO advised everyone to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts and engage in regular physical activity (60 minutes a day for children and 150 minutes spread through the week for adults).

The food production industry was also advised to reduce the fat, sugar and salt content of processed foods; and ensure they produced affordable but healthy and nutritious choices for all consumers.

It also charged them to restrict marketing of foods high in sugars, salt and fats, especially those foods aimed at children and teenagers; and ensure the availability of healthy food choices and supporting regular physical activity practice in the workplace.

WHO, in a statement issued over the observation of the 2022 World Obesity Day, said it was responding to the global obesity crisis on many fronts.

This includes monitoring global trends and prevalence, the development of a broad range of guidance addressing the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity, and providing implementation support and guidance for countries.

Following a request from Member States, the WHO secretariat is also developing an acceleration action plan, which would be discussed at the 76 World Health Assembly to be held in May 2022, with the aim of stopping obesity, tackling the epidemic in high burden countries and catalysing a global action.

The WHO also admonished countries’ leaderships to ensure that cities and towns made space for safe walking, cycling, and recreation, and equipped schools to help households to teach children healthy habits from early on.

The Mayo Clinic, an American academic medical center focused on integrated health care, education, and research, explained that an adult with a BMI below 18.5 was considered ‘underweight’, one with a BMI of between 18.5 – 24.9 was considered ‘normal’, while one between 25.0 – 29.9 was considered overweight and 3-.0 and higher, obese.

It mentioned family inheritance and influences, lifestyle choices such as eating unhealthy diet, liquid calories and inactivity (leading sedentary lifestyles), diseases and medications, age, pregnancy, quitting smoking, lack of sleep, and microbiome as some of the risk factors of obesity.

The Mayo Clinic noted that obesity could give complications such as heart disease and strokes, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers (uterus, cervix, ovary, breast, gallbladder, liver, pancreas etc), digestive problems, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and severe COVID-19 symptoms.

Government hands over Vea Irrigation Dam for rehabilitation

Vea (U/E),– Government, through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has handed over the Vea Irrigation Dam project in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region to a contractor for rehabilitation works to begin.

The contract was awarded to Merssers Rann Luuk Limited and rehabilitation work is expected to be completed in 30 months under the supervision of the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA).

Mr Stephen Yakubu, the Regional Minister, who handed over the project to the contractor at Vea on behalf of Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture, stated that the project when completed, would boost dry season farming and contribute to food security and poverty reduction.

The scope of work included the reconstruction of the canals and laterals, slopes of the dam to ensure stability, drainage systems, inner roads and perimeter protection around the irrigable area among others.

The project was established in 1965 as part of efforts to promote dry season agriculture among peasant farmers and had the capacity to irrigate about 1,179 hectares of farmlands.

It supplied water to about 4,000 farmers in nine major communities in both Bongo District and the Bolgatanga Municipality including Vea, Bongo-Nyariga, Yorogo, Dindubisi, Bolgatanga, Zaare, Yikene, Gowrie and Sumbrungu.

Due to lack of maintenance and major rehabilitation since its construction, all the canals and laterals were damaged, making it difficult for water to be carried to the farms, thereby throwing over 2,000 farmers out of business.

Mr Yakubu noted that apart from the project empowering the youth in the region to engage in productive ventures through farming to mitigate migration, reduce poverty, ensure food security, it would contribute to cutting down cost in importing food particularly rice.

“It will interest you to know that between 2007 and 2015, the amount spent on imported rice rose from US$151 million to US$1.2 billion. The Vea Irrigation project alone has a total of 850 hectares of rice cultivation, comprising 350 hectares of lowland and 500 hectares of uplands for rice production.

“The irrigable land for rice production may double to about 1,700 hectares when completed and I am very hopeful this increase in hectares will drastically reduce the importation of rice to realise the vision of President Akufo-Addo’s Ghana beyond aid,” he added.

The Regional Minister noted that due to erratic rainfall caused by climate change, government was not only committed to constructing new dams and dugouts but was rehabilitating existing irrigation schemes to make agriculture attractive to the youth.

He warned the contractor to ensure quality work stating “government will not tolerate shoddy work and my technical men will visit the site from time to time and report to me if you are doing the right thing”.

Engineer Wilson Darkwa, the Executive Director, GIDA, advised the beneficiaries to plant trees around the dam for protection, and urged them to cooperate and support the contractor to finish the work within schedule, to restore the livelihood of the people.

Naba Thomas Azubire II, the Divisional Chief of the Vea community, applauded the government for the intervention and noted that it was a big relief to residents of the area who mostly depended on the dry season farming as source of livelihood due to the erratic rainfall pattern.

Whoever buys Chelsea will be lucky – Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said “whoever buys the club will be lucky to have it”, and added his commitment to staying with the Blues.

The Stamford Bridge side’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich is planning to sell the club.

He has taken the decision following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Chelsea, for me, is a perfect fit. I love to be here and love everything about the club and, hopefully, it continues,” said Tuchel.

“There is now uncertainty but isn’t there always as a football manager?

“I’m used and trained to live with it. Of course, different levels and, I have to be honest, this is quite a level but I am positive and hope things will end well.”

Tuchel became Chelsea manager when he replaced Frank Lampard in January 2021 and led them to Champions League victory last season.

“I have the opposite of a problem staying here. I said many times that I love working in the Premier League,” said the German.

“I love being in England and feeling the tradition and love for sports in general, and for football in particular. It’s an amazing place to be.”

Abramovich said he was “giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care” of the club before the League Cup final against Liverpool.

He then announced his plans to sell the Blues prior to the FA Cup tie at Luton Town.

“I think Chelsea is a strong club and will stay a strong club,” added Tuchel. “Our owner decided to sell the club but he sells a strong, solid and very well organised club on the highest level.

“He was, and is, a very passionate owner who cares about the team, the club and the performance personally, which is very rare and makes him very special.”

Asked if the next owner could match Abramovich’s success, Tuchel said: “We will see, we will see. Let’s speak in the next 20 years and then we’ll see.

“Whoever buys the club will be lucky to have it.”
Tuchel said former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, who is the Blues’ technical and performance advisor, had given people at the club “a quick brief” of the situation but there was “not too much that we didn’t already know”.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, who has dual Russian-Canadian citizenship, did not give the briefing as Tuchel said she “is ill at the moment, otherwise, she would have been here”.

“It does not make sense to worry too much because we don’t have a lot of influence, not to say no influence at all. That was the bottom line,” added Tuchel, whose side play at Burnley on Saturday.

“We can allow ourselves to focus on what we love the most and that is football, and to perform the best way possible.

“What makes me very positive is that we did this twice in these circumstances against Liverpool and Luton Town.”

On the proposed sale of the club, investment banker and corporate takeover advisor Keith Harris said “there aren’t going to be 20 or 30 people queuing up to buy” Chelsea.

“It’s a rare beast that has the odd £3bn lying in a back pocket,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“It’s a big, big ask.”
Harris was part of the team that negotiated the sale of Chelsea to Abramovich in 2003, and added: “I think the timeline for this to happen would be by the end of this season or at the very beginning of the transfer window, which obviously starts soon afterwards – and I still think it remains a big if.”

2022 World Cup: Ukraine seek play-off semi-final with Scotland postponement

Ukraine have requested a postponement of their World Cup play-off semi-final against Scotland.

The nations were due to meet at Hampden on 24 March but football in Ukraine has been suspended following Russia’s invasion of the country.

The winners will play either Wales or Austria for a place at Qatar 2022.

World governing body Fifa say they are working with Uefa and the Scottish Football Association to “find an appropriate solution”.

Confirming the request, a spokesperson added: “Fifa expresses its deepest solidarity to everybody affected by what is happening in Ukraine. A further update will be provided in due course.”

Earlier this week, Scottish FA president Rod Petrie wrote “football is inconsequential amid conflict” in a message to his Ukrainian counterpart.

Petrie said he had written, “to send a message of support, friendship and unity”.

Speaking prior to news of the postponement request, Scotland and Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong said: “Football takes a back seat in a situation like this when everyone is thinking of the welfare and suffering of the people of Ukraine.”

The World Cup draw is scheduled to take place on 1 April, with the tournament starting on 21 November.

Scotland have three Nations League Group B fixtures in June – with Ukraine again involved in those, along with Armenia and Republic of Ireland. Those fixtures could well be rearranged if an alternative date is needed for the play-off semi-final.
