Organizations must take a holistic view to vulnerabilities in cybersecurity – Albert Yirenchi Danquah

The Head of Information Security at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Albert Yirenchi Danquah, has urged organizations to take a comprehensive and unified view of cybersecurity vulnerabilities since every vulnerability in cybersecurity is a potential risk. Albert Yirenchi Danquah said this at the 2022 State of Cybersecurity Posture Webinar, hosted by Cybersecurity Insiders.

According to him, vulnerabilities taken in isolation can be a dangerous enterprise because vulnerabilities can escalate. He said “Taking a unified view to vulnerabilities is critical because, in cybersecurity, everything is a risk. It is not the best if we look at cybersecurity in isolation because one vulnerability can multiply and escalate risks. The real cybersecurity risks that an organization faces come into view when there is a comprehensive and unified consideration”.

Albert Yirenchi Danquah further mentioned in his submission that even though all vulnerabilities are important, it is critical to prioritize cybersecurity vulnerabilities depending on the kind of asset the vulnerability affects, the location of the asset on the network as well as its value. “As our network infrastructure becomes more complex and widespread, it becomes harder to prioritize.

However, prioritizing vulnerabilities helps in attacking which ones present the most risks for a focused and targeted intervention. And every organization depending on what they do will inform their priorities relative to cybersecurity”, he noted.

He also advised organizations to as much as possible, quantify risk in monetary terms as that will help in the prioritization of remediation given the constant limitation we all have on human and capital resources.

The webinar brought together cybersecurity experts to deliberate on the complexities of vulnerabilities and risks in cybersecurity in the face of growing technological diffusion and ways to mitigate the impact and effects of such vulnerabilities. The panel included Vinay Sridhara, Chief Technology Officer and Head of Engineering at Balbix, and Vasu Surabhi, Director – Cybersecurity at Microland.

The panel discussed topics including ‘quantifying cybersecurity posture in monetary terms’, ‘improving the visibility of cybersecurity vulnerabilities’, and ‘unifying on-premises and cloud security posture’.

LG unveils energy efficiency artcool inverter air-conditioners in Ghana

LG Electronics (LG) continues to excite Ghanaians with cutting-edge air conditioners that are powered by LG’s ingenious inverter technology. LG’s inverter technology is highly developed and well-regarded around the world, and it considerably improves energy efficiency and performance. Rising electricity costs and environmentally conscious consumers are driving the use of energy-efficient air conditioners around the world.

What do the Consumers Want?

It is natural that customers want an Air conditioner that has three main compositions – Comfort Function, Convenient Installation, and Easy Maintenance. These compositions are summarized as; Less Energy Consumption, Powerful Performance, Durability, Less Noise, and Hygiene. On the contrary, if the product is too difficult to install or is inconvenient to manage, it will cause inconvenience to customers.

LG Electronics is one of the companies at the forefront of the next generation of innovative Residential Air Conditioning (RAC). LG has prioritized earth environment preservation, sustainable social advancement, and improved the quality of life of all its stakeholders over the last 20 years with a vision to create differentiated customer value.

Outstanding Performance via Dual Inverter Compressor

“Energy efficiency is one of the key parameters for consumers while making purchasing decisions for air conditioners. The LG Dual Inverter AC series combines design innovation with advances in technology to deliver an optimal cooling performance. This holistic approach to product design has resulted in increased power efficiency and an abundance of smart features that enhance the air conditioning experience.

Employing LG’s DUAL Inverter Compressor, LG air conditioners consume 70 percent less electricity and cool 40 percent faster than non-inverter models.
Additionally, LG’s industry-leading compressor technology ensures a near-silent performance that allows users to enjoy a more relaxing and pleasant indoor environment. Noted for its durability and reliability, the DUAL Inverter Compressor comes guaranteed by a 10-year warranty.

The Dual Inverter Compressor motor has a wide rotational frequency and a higher speed cooling range than a conventional compressor, allowing the Air Conditioner to cool more quickly, last longer, and run more quietly. So no matter how high the temperature, the Air Conditioner distributes cool air immediately to every corner of the room.

The unit has a larger skew fan which expels powerful blasts of air through its large outlet, optimally designed to fill spaces with cool air faster and farther. Due to their twin-rotor, there is a faster cooling at a wider operating frequency or ‘broader tonnage’. Hence, dual inverters offer better cooling in terms of precision in temperature control due to variable tonnage and speed of cooling.

“We understand the importance of reducing energy consumption for Nigerian consumers, and we’ve designed our latest energy-efficient air conditioners to drastically reduce energy intake,” said Mr. Jung June Yoon, General Manager, Air Solution LG Electronics West African Operations.

He added: “In 2022, LG will continue focusing on developing innovative products with an emphasis on creating value for our consumers.” And in this first quarter, we would be launching the third generation of Gencool Air Conditioners in Nigeria.

Unlike traditional air conditioners that require a large generator to start due to their high start-up electric power, LG’s GEN COOL air conditioner can be started with smaller generators thanks to LG’s unique inverter technology. According to LG, 1HP AC requires a 0.7KVA generator, 1.5 HP requires 0.9KVA, and 2HP requires 1.5 KVA.

As a result, the LG GEN COOL Air Conditioner includes the GEN Mode, which enables the use of a small capacity generator in locations where electric supply is insufficient, obviating the need for a larger generator. As a result, you can reduce initial electric requirements by using the AC’s GEN Mode option.

The LG Artcool AC – Perfect Partner For Perfect Health Care

Equipped with an array of smart features and gorgeous sleek designs, the latest ARTCOOL models offer power and performance while also serving as stylish additions to any modern living space. An expanded range comprising various capacities presents more choices to satisfy LG’s ever-expanding customer base in Nigeria.

LG’s latest line-up of Artcool air conditioners outstanding with the UVnano technology available in LG Dual-Cool models can eliminate germs caused by moisture. Bacteria and viruses Up to 99.99 percent of the body and impeller are certified by TUV Rheinland, the world’s leading independent inspection service.

The powerful Plasma Ionizer protects you from odors and harmful substances in the air with over 3 million ions to sterilize not only the air passing through the air-conditioner but also surrounding surfaces for a safer, cleaner environment. Ionizer has been proven to sterilize over 99% of adhering bacteria within 60 minutes. (Sterilize Escherichia coli over 99.9% in 30 min and Staphylococcus aureus over 99.6% in 60 min).

With an antibacterial Air Filter as the first line of defense, it is designed to capture and eliminate dust particles and bacteria from various sources.

Keeping itself clean from the inside has never been easier. The interior of the air-conditioner is maintained by drying off the heat exchanger, then sterilizing the interior once more with the Plasmaster ions to eliminate unwanted mold and odors.

In combining these three features, the LG Art Cool Air-conditioner helps to combat allergies, asthma, and air-borne viruses making it perfect for keeping your home healthy and keeping it comfortable at all times.

UNA-GH on Russian invasion of Ukraine

The National Executive Committee of the United Nations Association of Ghana (UNA-GH) an affiliate of the World Federation of the United Nations Associations (WFUNA) extends its compliments to the rest of the world at these dark days of the worst human conflict in Europe after the second world war.

The leadership has observed with grave concern, the ongoing invasion recently unleashed on the sovereign state of Ukraine by the Russian Government, authorized by President Vladmir Putin for the past one week, in spite of vehement calls for cessation, condemnations, demonstrations by Civil Society Organizations, International bodies (UN, NATO, EU, AU, ECOWAS, etc.) and its allies across the length and breadth of the Globe and sanctions from various Governments including the UK, USA, Germany, etc.

The reports of thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict, the casualties, destruction of properties and military installations send a gory signal of a full-scale conflict.

The United Nations Association of Ghana (UNA-GH) strongly condemns the Russian invasion of a sovereign country and calls for the ceasefire and withdrawal of troops and equipment from Ukraine.

Furthermore, the United Nations Association of Ghana (UNA-GH) denounces the blatant remarks by Vladimir Putin that he had put the Russian Defense forces on high alert for preparation for nuclear deterrence.

The preamble of the United Nations (UN) Charter states, “We the Peoples of the United Nations determined

1. to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

2. to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

3. to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

4. to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom”

In view of the above, the proposition couched in the UN Charter to which about One Hundred Ninety-three (193) countries have subscribed, which includes Russia, must guide both Permanent and Non-Permanent members alike to consolidate and enhance multilateralism, peaceful negotiation. The actions of the Russian government are totally unacceptable and barbaric in this day and age without taking sides of the feuding parties.

We equally urge Vladimir Putin to heed the cry of all to stop the invasion in order to regain his enviable role played as the current chair of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and permanent member of the UN.

The preamble to the Constitution of UNESCO declares that “Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.” Let us be part of the solution than being part of the problem.
Indeed, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr.).

To this end, the United Nations Association of Ghana dispassionately calls on the Ghana Government and the rest of Africa, Civil Society Organizations, etc. to provide more relief items to the people of Ukraine. They should also support the UN humanitarian fund in these critical times and also seek ways with the rest of the world to impress Vladimir Putin to stop this needless aggression on Ukraine and provide safety for nationals of both countries.

We also pray for divine intervention for peace to prevail because “if God does not watch the city, the watchman does it in vain and if God does not build the city, the builder does it in vain.”

93 graduate under Caterpillar/Mantrac Technicians for Africa programme

Ninety-three (93) young Ghanaians, who have successfully completed Mantrac Ghana Ltd’s Technicians for Africa Programme, have been awarded Foundational Certification at the Mohamed L Mansour Component Rebuild Centre at Ewusiejoe near Takoradi.

Technicians for Africa Programme, an 18-module free online programme, which spans 3-6 months, is fully sponsored by Caterpillar, the global leader in the manufacture of equipment for the construction, mining, oil and gas industries.

Since its inception six years ago, the Caterpillar/Mantrac partnered initiative has trained a total of 537 people out of which more than 50 are gainfully employed by Mantrac Ghana Limited across its branches in the country. Others are also gainfully employed by other companies.

Mantrac Ghana Limited, in a deliberate attempt to offer opportunities for those who merit employment, has also created a CV Bank for the yet to be employed trained technicians for consideration in the event of any vacancy.

Andrew Sarson, Service Manager at the Takoradi Component Rebuild Centre said at the fifth graduation ceremony that the Technicians for Africa Programme has been a great success so far a lot of young people have benefited from it.

“Caterpillar recognized shortage of opportunity for grassroots level entry into the profession and collaborated with Mantrac to create the platform for the youth to get trained. It is a good introduction to the industry, and we always encourage young school leavers and university graduates to take advantage and take the course”, he said.

Ghana, he noted, has opportunities in the mines and construction fields and needed qualified technicians to fill key positions.

Adam Martin, Product Support Manager at Mantrac Ghana Ltd, during an engagement with the participants via video conference, said theirs is a technical business, but opportunities also exist for non-engineers in sales and marketing. He added that having technical knowledge and experience will be an added advantage for job seekers since it will help them understand the issues and complexities involved in the field.

Abek Larbi-Boakye, Technical Training and Development Coordinator for Mantrac Ghana Ltd., said efforts are being made through engagements with technical universities and institutions to encourage more young Ghanaians to become trained technicians. Mantrac, he revealed, has formed a strategic partnership with the Takoradi Technical University to enable Mechanical Engineering students to have hands-on training sessions. Caterpillar has also donated an engine to the school to facilitate tuition.

Esther Ntow Kesse, who is currently doing her National Service with Genser Energy, was among the few females that graduated under the Technicians for Africa programme. She narrated how she is able to apply some of the modules to her current job. She advised ladies to have faith in themselves and pursue whatever they seek to do in life.

It is expected that the graduates become worthy ambassadors for the Caterpillar/Mantrac Technicians for Africa programme, encourage others to enrol, get properly trained and become sought-after service technicians for the continent of Africa and the world.

The Technicians for Africa Programme was launched in Ghana in November 2016 and seeks to train highly valued service technicians in the heavy equipment industry for career opportunities.

Though the programme is focused on mechanical engineering students from technical universities and institutions, other individuals without any technical background but who have the desire for career opportunities in that field can also apply.

Ghana’s Kwame Baah-Acheamfuor completes successful run as ITU Study Group 12 Chair

Ghana’s Kwame Baah-Acheamfuor has just completed an almost 10-year run as Chairman of International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Study Group 12 (SG-12), which churned out some of the world’s best standards on performance, quality of service (QoS), and quality of experience (QoE).

His intended eight-year run became almost 10 years because of Covid-19. But keeping Kwame at the head of ITU Study Group 12 has been worth the while of the global tech industry regulatory body because, under his leadership, the study group churned out loads of standards that have helped to improve performance, QoS, and QoE across the world.

He was presented with a certificate of honor as he exits the office after what he described as loads of achievements in terms of creating regulatory and strategic industry standards.

In his exit speech at an august event in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, Kwame noted that indeed, during his tenure, Study Group 12, which used to be mainly a developed countries’ affair, received a strong representation from the developing countries, leading to an average of 45 countries attending every meeting.

“Our most recent meeting had 94 countries present and that is testimony to wide representation we created on Study Group 12,” he said. “We also have some very key representations of experts from a wide range of industries who contributed to creating very relevant standards.”

As testimony to ensuring an all-inclusive group, Kwame will be succeeded by a Mexican female member of the group, who happens to be the first female to assume that office, and also from a developing country.

Beyond making the study group an all-inclusive one, Kwame noted that they also churned out very key standards that have helped countries to measure QoS under very challenging circumstances and even protect lives.

He mentioned, for instance, that standards produced by SG-12 have enabled an island like Vanuatu to measure QoS across waters and land, and also the in-car communication standards that allow drivers to communicate effectively without losing concentration behind the steering.

“The in-car communication standards were particularly important because the records would show that road accidents kill more people than Covid-19 does so it is important to ensure standards that will ensure that drivers can keep their eyes on the road while communicating in their cars effectively,” he said.

Kwame Baah-Acheamfuor mentioned that the internet quality, video quality, speech quality, and others that the world enjoyed, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown period were all based on standards created by SG-12.

As the world moves towards digital finance, Kwame is calling on industry players and regulators to make contributions to proposals put forward by SG-12 to ensure proper standards in that fast-growing space.

He was grateful to all the countries who presented delegates to SG-12, and to all the individual experts and organizations who contributed to the many relevant standards SG-12 put out under his leadership.

WVG commissions mechanised water system for Odumase in Nkwanta South

Accra,- World Vision Ghana (WVG), a Christian humanitarian development and advocacy organization, has constructed a mechanised water system for the Odumase community in the Nkwanta South Municipality.

The mechanised water system valued at $30,000.00 has officially been handed over to the people of the Odumase community who have hitherto faced acute water challenges.

The facility is expected to benefit over 4600 people in the community, including Basic and JHS school children.

At a ceremony to commission the project, Mr Baafour Oti-Boateng, Board Chairman of WVG said they were perturbed about the insufficient clean water for the community especially for the women and girls as they often trekked for miles in search of potable water.

“When children do not have access to clean water, it affects their health, nutrition, education and learning abilities, thus impacting many aspects of their lives.

“However, commissioning this mechanized water system today, WVG has restored hope for better futures for the over 4,600 people including girls and boys of the Odumase community. School Children alike can now learn better and become what they aspire to be in the future,” he said.

He urged community members and school children to cultivate the habit of regularly washing their hands to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Mr. Bright Lenwah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Nkwanta South, was grateful to WVG for coming to the aid of the people of Odumase who hitherto found it difficult to access potable water especially in “this dry season.”

“I want to thank WVG for the numerous developmental projects they have undertaken and continue to undertake within the Nkwanta South Municipality.

“We would continue to partner with you to ensure that our people get the needed social amenities they require for their living,” he said.

He, however, urged the Water and Sanitation Management Team in the community to keep the facility in good shape.
