At 2021 Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Announces Initiatives to Support Cutting-Edge Science in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and Help End the COVID Crisis

The foundation commits initial $50 million towards a new 10-year program and awards science leadership fellowships to 14 African scientists

SEATTLE, Nov. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Today at the 17th Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced an initial commitment of $50 million to support science and innovation in low- and middle-income countries. The Grand Challenges Global Call to Action is a 10-year initiative that will prioritize grants to scientists from low- and middle-income countries and support a balanced representation of women principal investigators.

This long-term initiative is designed to ensure scientists and institutions in low- and middle-income countries play a central role in shaping the global R&D agenda and developing solutions that can better meet the needs of their communities. Initial focus areas will include data science, such as mathematical modeling to inform national malaria control programs; digital health services for pregnant women; and innovations to close gaps identified by current programs for eliminating neglected tropical diseases.

At the annual meeting, which takes place November 8-11, the foundation will also launch the Global Immunology and Immune Sequencing for Epidemic Response (GIISER) program, which works to ensure scientists have the capacity to rapidly detect if new SARS-CoV-2 variants in their communities show signs of evading immune response. This will allow national and regional stakeholders to respond appropriately and develop products that meet the specific needs of their geographies. GIISER will operate as a decentralized network of autonomous and geographically distinct hubs that are able to connect local pathogen sequencing data and clinical epidemiology with local immunological understanding and tools. As part of this program, the foundation will provide $7 million over two years to investigative teams in eight countries (South Africa, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, and India) to expand their existing immunological capacity.

To further support scientists who are developing the innovations needed to end the pandemic and address urgent global health priorities, the foundation will announce the first cohort of the Calestous Juma Science Leadership Fellowship program on the second day of the meeting (November 9). Named after the late Calestous Juma, one of the world’s foremost visionaries in African-led science, the fellowship was launched at last year’s annual meeting to support the next generation of scientific leaders in Africa. The inaugural cohort includes 14 fellows from eight African countries—eight women and six men—who are leading projects that range from computational drug discovery to molecular epidemiology. Each fellow will receive up to $1 million over five years.

The Grand Challenges Annual Meeting is a global forum for researchers around the world to share their work, learn about cutting-edge advances in the field, and collaborate with other investigators and organizations. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drive inequity across the globe, this year’s meeting will focus on strengthening scientific collaborations to end the pandemic everywhere and promoting an inclusive recovery.

This year, it carried forward its sustainability journey by continuing to reduce its net emissions and compensating the unavoidable ones through a combination of nature-based forest conservation and clean energy projects. Le Groupe ALDO poursuit son engagement envers le climat

L’entreprise canadienne participe au Sommet mondial sur le climat et renouvelle sa certification carboneutre pour une 4e année consécutive

MONTRÉAL, 08 nov. 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Les enjeux climatiques sont plus cruciaux que jamais et le Groupe ALDO est déterminé à maintenir son engagement afin de construire un avenir à faible teneur en carbone. En plus d’annoncer le renouvellement de sa certification carboneutre pour une 4e année consécutive, le Groupe ALDO participe en ce moment au 11e Sommet mondial sur le climat (World Climate Summit), qui a lieu à Glasgow en Écosse. Il y a quelques semaines, l’entreprise canadienne de chaussures mode a également joint sa voix à la coalition internationale We Mean Business, regroupant plus de 600 entreprises qui appellent les dirigeants des plus grandes économies mondiales à renforcer leurs objectifs en matière de climat lors des discussions cruciales du G20 et de la COP26.

« Inspirés par la COP21 à Paris il y a 6 ans, nous avons pris la décision en 2018 de devenir la première entreprise de chaussures mode à être certifiée carboneutre. La COP de cette année sera un événement décisif – il existe un soutien mondial massif pour une action audacieuse contre les changements climatiques. Sommet mondial sur le climat : rallier les acteurs de l’industrie de la mode

Le 8 novembre à 10 h (TMG), Jonathan Frankel, vice-président sénior au Groupe ALDO, se joindra au panel Lead By Example – Harnessing Innovation towards a Carbon Neutral Fashion & Textile Industry pour discuter de la façon dont l’industrie de la mode peut travailler à réduire son empreinte et de la manière dont la collaboration entre fabricants, designers et consommateurs est essentielle pour atteindre la carboneutralité.

« La durabilité à long terme de la mode exige un changement systémique qui va au-delà des capacités d’une seule entreprise. Nous ne pouvons pas lutter seuls contre ce problème. Nous croyons fermement à la collaboration, et c’est pourquoi nous souhaitions prendre part à cet événement rassembleur », déclare Jonathan Frankel.

Conscient que le secteur de la mode a un impact sur le réchauffement de la planète, le Groupe ALDO a intensifié ses actions en faveur du climat ces dernières années. Un parcours vers la réduction de son empreinte carbone

En 2018, le Groupe ALDO est devenu la première entreprise de l’industrie de la chaussure et des accessoires mode au monde à être certifiée carboneutre pour ses magasins corporatifs, bureaux et centres de distribution. L’organisation a par la suite étendu cet engagement à ses expéditions de commerce électronique et au transport de ses produits.

L’an dernier, l’entreprise a réduit les émissions de carbone liées à ses activités de 74 % par rapport à 2013. Cette année, elle poursuit son parcours de développement durable en continuant à réduire ses émissions nettes et en compensant celles qui sont inévitables par l’entremise d’une combinaison de projets de conservation des forêts et de production d’énergie propre axés sur la nature.

Pour la quatrième année consécutive, le Groupe ALDO s’est ainsi vu octroyer la certification d’entreprise « carboneutre » par South Pole, un fournisseur de premier plan de solutions et de services globaux liés au développement durable ayant un processus de certification rigoureux et transparent.

GSA calls for strict enforcement of standards in the country

Effia (WR),- Professor Alex Dodoo, the Executive Director of the Ghana Standards Authority says enforcement must not only be seen in the law and order arena but in quality and standards.

He said, God, the creator, believed in standards and specifications as stated in Genesis 1:28, saying, it was about time Ghanaians began doing the right things for the right results in trade and commerce.

Handing over of a new Wielding studio for the Takoradi Technical University by the Design and Technology Institute, Prof. Dodoo, said it was a divine duty to promote accuracy in measurements as the creator designed it, saying, “I mean standards and not double standards”.

He wondered why dishonest behaviour seemed to be winning over the rights in society and queried, “we are all Christians, Muslims or have one faith to believe in and all these beliefs promote standards and right doings… leadership must begin to set the right examples”.

Prof. Dodoo, encouraged the school to begin looking at manufacturing instruments that promoted standards and measurements, adding, “why do we still use Oluka in the country, when weighing scales should be the order? the fuel filling stations are no different”.

He said, “the conversation on standards must begin now on rules and regulations…consumers must also hold the powers that be accountable to get results”.

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, noted how inspection on some school furniture revealed disgusting results on lack of specifications and prayed that precision and accuracy in designing would be adopted by people in that sector.
