Accra: The 2026 University of Ghana Corporate Football League (UGCL) was officially launched on January 3, 2026. The league is scheduled to run from February to June 2026, with 20 teams competing over 19 weeks to crown a single champion.
According to Ghana Web, speaking at the launch held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Vice Chancellor Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo emphasized the crucial role of the UGCL in academics by strengthening individuals outside the classroom and workplace. Prof Amfo highlighted that the league's focus is on scaling impact by incorporating feedback from players and spectators and strengthening partnerships. She noted that sports are integral to education, promoting discipline, teamwork, leadership, and strategic thinking, competencies that are not fully instilled in classrooms. The exchange of boardroom seats for jerseys allows colleagues to enhance workplaces and personal development.
Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Dr Fred Awaah, who represented the sports minister, commended the organizers and urged them to continue promoting wellness through sports. He reflected on the league's success since its inception in 2025, noting its role in fostering friendships across organizations, strengthening professional relationships, and providing corporate workers with an anticipated event beyond meetings. Dr Awaah emphasized that UGCL aligns with the ministry's recreation and wellness initiatives, encouraging more corporate institutions to participate.
Meanwhile, the head of RITE Sports Services, Yaw Sakyi, outlined the logistics of the games, stating that each half will last 20 minutes, making each game approximately 50 minutes long. He hinted at exciting prizes for this year's edition, which could include television coverage.
The league features two groups. Group A includes the defending champions, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, alongside Bui Power Authority, Ghana Football Association, Stanbic Bank, Ghana Armed Forces Officers' Sports Club, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), GOIL Ghana, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). Group B consists of Union Ghana, Ghana Airports Company Limited, National Petroleum Authority, Zenith Bank, Lebanese Sports Community, Telecel Ghana, Wilmar Africa, and the Forestry Commission.
