Cape Coast,- The Central Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) at the weekend joined Zoomlion Ghana and the Department of Water and Sanitation to embark on a clean-up exercise in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
Mr Fred Appiah, the Regional Director of the NHIA, together with the staff of the Cape Coast and Komenda- Edina-Eguafo- Abrem (KEEA) offices, swept the streets, desilt choked gutters and weeded the surroundings within the Metropolis.
The exercise formed part of the NHIA week-long celebration on the theme: “NHIS-using Ghana Card for Expanded Access to Healthcare.”
The week was used to create awareness on the NHIS card linkage to the Ghana card.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise, the NHIS Director said the clean-up was to ensure that the environment was kept clean to promote good health.
He said a clean environment promoted good health and could attract investors for socio-economic development since the Region was the hub of tourism.
He underscored the need for leaders and residents to engage in communal activities to accelerate the pace of development in the area.
Mr Appiah said the exercise would be extended to other communities in the Region.
He appealed to the people in the area to rekindle their communal spirit and undertake regular clean-up exercises and charged them to join hands with the Assemblies to keep the Region clean.
Mr Appiah urged Zoomlion Company to ensure the regular collection and disposal of waste from homes within its concessional areas.
Residents should also keep their homes and immediate surroundings clean at all times and refrain from indiscriminate littering and disposal of refuse.
He took the opportunity to encourage Ghanaians to link their NHIS card to the Ghana card for easier access to health care, using a common card.
