Cape Coast, – Three hours of torrential rains in the Anaafo Market in the Cape Coast Metropolitan Area have been left in distress after heavy rains fall.
The downpour which started around 13: 40 hours and lasted for about 3 hours swept away most of their items including foodstuff, leaving traders with the fear that their lives could be in danger if the rains persisted or the situation was not controlled.
The GNA during a visit to the market saw women and their children unpacking their market items from a nearly open bridge where the floodwater passes.
The women were moved to the present location near the old market which is being reconstructed to give it a face-lift.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mrs Aba Thatcher, a fish seller expressed worry over the situation adding that the rains had taken away all her fish and the sales she had made for the day.
She called on the Assemblyman and all well-meaning individuals to help construct a better drainage system for the area so that they could have a sound mind to sell.
Ms Rebecca Sam, who sells vegetables, said though her items were not affected, she sustained some injuries on her left leg in an attempt to escape the floods.
“The bridge to the market is weak and I am appealing to the Metro Assembly to rehabilitate it”, she pleaded.
Miss Gillian Mensah, tomatoes and onion seller, said she had no option but to wade through the rain just to save some of her items from being carried away”.
Mr. Felix Abu, a shoemaker told the GNA that, floods were mostly experienced after heavy rainfall but the three-hour rain had caused a lot of damage in the area.
He further called on the Government to as a matter of urgency renovate the weak bridge which was a death trap.
