Burkina Faso are appearing in their 12th AFCON tournament, they return after missing out in 2019.

Burkina Faso have managed to finish second and third in two of their last three AFCON appearances, ending as runners up to Nigeria in 2013 and defeating Ghana in the play-off for third place in 2017.

The Stallions qualified for five successive AFCON finals their best run of successive qualifications, between 2010 and 2017, before failing to qualify in 2019.

Burkina Faso first qualified for the AFCON in 1978 but waited 18 years to 1996 before they managed to reach the tournament again.

Burkina Faso have never previously won any of their 11 opening games at AFCON Finals.

Burkina Faso finished top of their qualifying Group B en-route to Cameroon 2020, they went through qualifying undefeated (W3 D3). Finishing ahead of Malawi Uganda and South Sudan.

Burkina Faso conceded just two goals in qualifying for the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations, Aristide Bance and Lassina Traore top-scoring for them with two goals each.

In two of their last three AFCON appearances in 2013 against Nigeria and 2017 against Cameroon, Burkina Faso have opened up the tournament with 1-1 draws against the eventual champions.

For the third AFCON in a row that they have qualified for Burkina Faso will face the hosts in 2015 and 2017 they drew with Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Overall this is Burkina Faso’s fourth meeting with an AFCON host nation, in addition to their draws with Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in 2015 and 2017, they lost to Ghana 3-0 in 1978.
