Accra: Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, has raised concerns about the alleged denial of national identification documents to residents of Zongo communities. He claims that these denials are based on perceptions of foreignness due to residents' names or ethnic backgrounds.
According to Ghana News Agency, Alhaji Baba Jamal highlighted the issue during a conversation with journalists in Parliament. He pointed out that communities like Nima have existed for generations and are home to diverse ethnic groups who are fully Ghanaian. The MP stressed that denying citizens access to identification documents violates their rights and could lead to societal tension and division.
Alhaji Baba Jamal also commended President Mahama for introducing an additional public holiday for Muslims during Eid-ul-Fitr. He described it as a step toward inclusivity, noting that the added holiday allows for peaceful and harmonious celebrations, accommodating those who fast for different durations during Ramadan.
Furthermore, he praised the strong interfaith harmony in Ghana, where Muslims and Christians support each other's celebrations. He remarked that this unity is a source of pride for the nation.
