Accra: Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, has urged the chiefs, politicians, and citizens of Gonjaland to set aside their political differences and come together to promote peace and development in the Savannah Region. This call was made during the Damba Festival durbar, which focused on the theme, 'Celebrating Our Heritage: The Role of Traditional Leadership in Promoting Unity and Development.'
According to Ghana News Agency, Yagbonwura emphasized the critical role chiefs play in fostering peace, unity, and development within the Gonja Kingdom, a region characterized by diverse backgrounds and political views. He highlighted that while individuals may support different political parties, it is imperative to remember that politics should not fracture relationships, as everyone remains connected as brothers and sisters post-elections.
The Yagbonwura also praised the government for its initiatives, such as the 24-Hour Economy, Big Push infrastructure programme, Adwumawura, Free Primary Health Care, and efforts to stabilize the cedi. He acknowledged that these policies have the potential to enhance living standards and generate employment opportunities for the youth, provided they are implemented effectively. He urged the government to expedite the completion of ongoing projects to ensure timely benefits for the growing Savannah Region.
Expressing concern over educational outcomes in the region, Yagbonwura called for a collective effort from chiefs, parents, and teachers to address the issue. He proudly announced the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund's successful settlement of US$20,000 in tuition fees for Kassim Bakari, a young Gonja student pursuing Commercial Pilot Licence training in South Africa, allowing him to complete his studies and potentially become the first commercial pilot from Gonjaland.
Furthermore, the Yagbonwura cautioned the youth against drug abuse, labeling it a significant threat to the region's future. In support of development efforts, Dr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, stated the government's financial commitment to the Damongo Water Supply System with ongoing procurement. He assured that rural electrification remains a top priority, with work continuing until all communities are lit.
Dr. Debrah further reiterated the government's dedication to peacefully resolving disputes, as unresolved land and succession issues hinder development and affect families. He also announced a personal donation of GHS200,000.00 to the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund. Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, highlighted the government's success in stabilizing the economy, reinforcing the administration's developmental agenda.
